Tom Holland found Dry January challenging, but giving up alcohol has improved his sleep and relationship.
In 2022, actor Tom Holland attempted a "dry January" by abstaining from alcohol for 31 days, but the challenge proved more difficult than he anticipated.
"Holland shared on the Rich Roll podcast in October that he was terrified by how much he struggled without alcohol during the first month, so he decided to challenge himself by going without booze in February as well."
The second month proved to be even more intense for the Spider-Man actor.
The 28-year-old admitted during the podcast that it "was no easier" and "got a little bit harder" to overcome his alcohol addiction. He confessed that he was starting to panic, thinking, "Damn. I have a bit of an alcohol thing."
Holland remained sober for an extended period following a discussion with his doctor about his liver health. The challenge of quitting alcohol and the apparent harm it was inflicting on his body motivated him to pledge another month without drinking.
He set a goal to maintain his sobriety until his birthday, as he was still struggling with his health in March.
"If I can make it to my birthday on June 1st and go six months without drinking, I will have proven to myself that I don't have a problem. I'm just young and enjoying a drink."
Holland was successful and so enjoyed his sobriety that he decided to abstain from drinking until the end of the year.
"I improved in handling stressful situations, sleeping better, and my relationships with family and work were better," he stated.
"As soon as I hit that milestone, I knew I wouldn't drink again because I had found the best version of myself."
Holland stated that as an actor, he always had a reason to be drinking, even though he didn't consider himself a "bad drunk."
I wasn't the type of person who could limit myself with how much I was drinking," he said. "I wanted to lock the door behind me.
Robert Downey Jr., who has been sober for more than 20 years, is a real ally to Holland and has appeared on the big screen alongside him many times.
