I won't be consuming these 6 foods that can accelerate the aging process and shorten my lifespan, as advised by a plastic surgeon with 20 years of experience.
While anti-aging procedures may make you appear younger, they do not actually reverse the aging process. As a plastic surgeon, my job involves various anti-aging treatments, but they do not restore the functionality of younger cells in your body.
One of the most important lessons I've learned in my 20 years of studying longevity and anti-aging practices is that food can serve as both medicine and poison. Consuming the wrong types of food can accelerate the aging process, harm your skin, and even shorten your lifespan.
Here's what you won't find me eating:
1. Burnt and charred foods
Grilling meat and cooking bacon on a griddle can lead to the formation of heterocyclic amines, which have been linked to cancer and accelerated aging.

While an occasional old-fashioned summertime cookout is acceptable, my recommended cooking techniques are boiling, steaming, slow-cooking, and low- to medium-heat baking. Additionally, consuming raw food is also recommended.
2. Sugary beverages
Consuming refined carbs and sugar can accelerate aging through inflammation and glycation, with the average American consuming 152 pounds of sugar annually and about 20% of daily calories coming from sugar-sweetened beverages alone, including soda, sports drinks, sweet teas, sweetened coffee drinks, and juice.
A research found that annually, 184,000 deaths can be linked to the consumption of sugary drinks, which have been proven to increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
3. Snack foods
Some of the most common ultra-processed foods include pies, cake, candy, chips, cookies, doughnuts, and granola bars.
Preservatives and other chemicals produced in labs and factories are added to foods to increase their shelf life. However, these chemicals are low in fiber, which is essential for gut health. Foods with low fiber content are more likely to cause blood-sugar and insulin spikes.
4. Most dairy foods
Do you fear I will criticize cheese? Brace yourself. Despite their widespread popularity, I believe we consume dairy products in excess.
Although dairy products can provide nutrients, they also contain high levels of sugar (from lactose) and an inflammatory protein called casein, which many people are intolerant of.
If you choose to consume dairy, yogurt (especially those without added sugar) could be the healthiest option.
5. Super salty foods
While a small amount of salt is harmless, an excessive intake can lead to skin aging and water retention, resulting in puffiness and bloating.
Have you observed that your eyes appear puffy in the morning following a dinner of Chinese takeout? This is due to the high levels of salt and MSG (monosodium glutamate, which contains sodium) in the food.
6. Refined grains
Stripped of their nutrients and fiber, refined grains are made into white flour, commonly used in baked goods, pasta, and white rice.
White flour results in a lighter product with a less heavy and bulky taste, but it also digests rapidly, leading to a larger increase in glucose and insulin levels.
Foods to help you age slower and live longer
You want to feed your body foods that promote cellular rejuvenation.
I enjoy a balanced grocery list that includes a variety of fruits (such as apples, blueberries, kiwi, grapefruit, and melons), vegetables (including arugula, broccoli, carrots, and spinach), and grains (like wild rice, oatmeal, brown rice, and quinoa).
I prefer grass-fed, pastured or wild-caught eggs, meat, poultry, and seafood, especially salmon, mackerel, and sardines, as well as lean fish such as cod, halibut, and tilapia.
It is understandable that we only have one life on this planet, but there is still joy in indulging in a slice of cake at a daughter's birthday party, a greasy burger with friends, or a scoop of gelato while on vacation. Occasionally, a tasty splurge is perfectly acceptable.
