David Beckham is happy that social media didn't exist during his soccer career: "There was too much bullying."

In a conversation with CNBC host Tania Bryer at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, soccer star David Beckham discussed the dangers of social media and how his family copes with online harassment.

The 49-year-old president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF reflected on his soccer career, which spanned from 1992 to 2013, and how he managed the stress of being shown a red card during a game.

"I'm glad social media wasn't around during that time because it was already bad enough," Beckham stated. "The things people said to me were already difficult enough."

Victoria Beckham and her husband, David, have four children who are under immense pressure from social media. Their eldest child, Brooklyn, is 25 years old, while their youngest, Harper, is 13.

The soccer player stated that his daughter does not use any social media, while his sons have significant online profiles.

The problem is that everyone is attracted to the messages they receive, despite their attempts to discourage it. They all sit down with me and Victoria and express their concerns about dealing with their dad. The bullying goes beyond children and affects adults as well.

"Regrettably, our society tolerates bullying, which is unacceptable. Thus, social media platforms must take responsibility to safeguard individuals from it."

Beckham, with over 88 million followers on Instagram, stated that he feels responsible for his content and that each post is carefully considered.

He stated that he goes through every post and caption, regardless of whether it's commercial or not, because he believes it's important.

He acknowledged the huge responsibility that comes with having a large social media following and the existence of both good and bad aspects of social media. He stated that his social media platform is used for good purposes.

On Monday, Beckham, a first-time attendee at WEF, was awarded the Crystal Award for his work protecting vulnerable children. He has been a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005.
