One of the most Googled houses in the world, the Chicago-area house from 'Home Alone,' has just sold for $5.5 million.

Over a decade, the "Home Alone" house has been sold to new owners for the first time.

The property located in the Chicago suburbs at 671 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka, Illinois 60093 was first put up for sale in May 2024 for $5.25 million. After just one week on the market, sellers received a $5.5 million offer, which was about $250,000 above the asking price. The sale has only recently been finalized.

Dawn McKenna, the sellers' agent of Coldwell Banker Realty's Dawn McKenna Group, tells CNBC Make It that the sellers wanted to remain in the house for another holiday season.

"I will tell you it was very easy to do because they were emotionally attached to it. I called my husband from the house and asked if we should just buy it," McKenna says. "As you walked through the house, you could tell it was filled with love and memories, and there was definitely a warmth and an interesting embrace."

The Georgian home, constructed in 1921, is a 9,126 square feet redbrick house with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. It boasts four fireplaces, first-floor and second-floor laundry facilities, a gym, a private movie theater room, and an indoor sports court.

"The house in the iconic movie is one of the most Googled homes worldwide, but when you're inside, it truly feels like a family and friends gathering place," McKenna remarks.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the house was last sold in 2012 for $1.585 million and sits on a 0.534-acre lot.

In 2018, the Illinois home underwent a complete renovation and expansion, with most of it appearing vastly different from its depiction in "Home Alone." However, certain elements, such as the front door and the central staircase where Macaulay Culkin's character Kevin McCallister sleds, have remained unchanged.

"The current owners of the house, who are also movie enthusiasts, revealed to The Wall Street Journal that the classic scene from the movie was present in their home and they had no intention of removing or altering it in any way."

The formal living and dining room spaces have largely remained unchanged in form and structure, as per the original listing.

The family room addition to the home includes French doors that open onto the backyard, while the garage is heated and can accommodate three cars.

Lori Nieman, the buyers' agent of @properties Christie's International Real Estate, stated that the renovation work and movie history of the home were significant factors for the buyers.

"As everyone else, they appreciate the importance of the home in film history. They recognize its significance and embrace it. However, the home's renovations, expansion, and preservation also influenced their decision. They aim to maintain the home for future generations."

The sale of the house, which was first put on the market, included a Lego replica of the house and a large Kevin Lego figure, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. McKenna confirmed that the new buyers will get to keep these gifts.

In the North Shore neighborhood of Chicago, the sale of the house in 2025 has been the highest price sale so far, according to McKenna.
