The U.S. Surgeon General considers this 1 thing to be a 'powerful source of joy.'
As his tenure as U.S. Surgeon General comes to an end, Vivek Murthy has issued a "final prescription" to tackle a widespread issue in America: loneliness.
Murthy's 2023 report stated that loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease, dementia, depression, and anxiety.
To remedy this Murthy suggests investing in relationships.
"In "My Parting Prescription for America," he wrote that relationships that make us feel seen and allow us to be ourselves can be a source of joy and support, and can also help reduce stress."
A recent PLUS ONE study found that 40% of Americans feel they are not as close with their friends as they would like.
Building friendships and communities can positively impact mental and physical health, according to Murthy.
'We can create technology free zones in our lives'
There are three factors Murthy says have contributed to the loneliness epidemic:
- The decline in participation in civic organizations such as recreational leagues, service organizations, neighborhood associations, and faith institutions has led to a decrease in American involvement in community activities.
- Due to the increased demands on their time from work and childcare, parents are spending less time socializing with friends compared to a few decades ago.
- He wrote that the replacement of friends with followers and confidantes with contacts on social media has resulted in a decline in the depth and quality of our relationships.
To tackle some of these challenges, Murthy suggests a straightforward remedy: reaching out to a friend.
He suggested starting by connecting with loved ones daily and making time for regular communication, even if it's brief.
He advises avoiding phone usage during in-person gatherings.
He suggested establishing technology-free zones in our lives to improve the quality of our interactions when we are with others.
Engaging in activities at your community center or place of worship can foster stronger, face-to-face relationships.
Improving the quality of conversations can make Americans feel more heard and less alone.
