A neuroscientist and professor at NYU, Dr. Wendy Suzuki, suggests that the simplest way to keep your mind sharp is by getting some steps in.

Walking for just 10 minutes can reduce anxiety and depression levels, according to Suzuki in a TED Intersections appearance.

Going for a brief walk can provide the same benefits as a "bath of neurotransmitters" such as dopamine and serotonin, she stated.

Engaging in regular walks for an extended period of time can provide both neurochemicals and growth factors that can enhance brain health, according to her.

Even if you were a "couch potato until you're 75," consistent walks can still improve your brain health.

She neglected her body for several years while focusing on her career. It wasn't until she felt "so good" after a river rafting trip to Peru that she began researching the effects of physical activity on the brain.

A 2022 systematic review in Neurology found that individuals who regularly engaged in physical activity, including walking, had a 17% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who did not exercise frequently.

According to Suzuki in a MasterClass on brain health, engaging in forms of activity that require strategy, such as soccer or basketball, will work your prefrontal cortex more.

Suzuki believes that the best form of exercise is the one that makes you the happiest, and she would prescribe physical activity to just about anyone. She also stated that any time of day is the best time of day to work out because our lives are so busy.
