The most valuable job-search advice from a 15-year career expert: "You can level the playing field"
Over the years, Jasmine Escalera has been exposed to a wide range of career advice on social media, some of which has been beneficial and some of which has been detrimental.
Platforms like TikTok excel at sharing videos and tips on effective networking.
According to Escalera, a Miami-based career coach with 15 years of experience, human connections could significantly speed up your job search compared to activities like rage-applying.
She advises focusing on building a healthy and supportive professional network.
Escalera advises that during networking conversations, it's crucial to inquire about salary ranges.
There are several ways to subtly discuss salary during a networking conversation, she suggests. Instead of inquiring about someone's salary, maintain the conversation's focus on the desired job position. You could ask, "Do you have any insights and guidance on the typical salary range for X position?"
The gender pay gap is a well-known issue, with women not being compensated equally for the same jobs as men. However, Escalera points out that the problem may also stem from a lack of knowledge about the industry's actual payment practices.
Escalera advises that while online salary databases can be a helpful starting point, they may not provide a precise salary range that accurately reflects your experience level, location, industry, desired company, or specific set of qualifications.
"Networking can provide you with the information and knowledge you need to even the playing field."
