In 2025, the most desired type of person to date among singles, according to a new Tinder report, is someone who is kind and empathetic.
No matter what traits your partner possesses, TikTok can categorize them as dog-adjacent. If they hate everyone but you, they are a rottweiler boyfriend. If protecting you is their primary concern, they might be a dobermann.
In 2025, 45% of singles are looking for a "golden retriever type" on Tinder, according to the company's end-of-year report.
This means someone who is loyal, friendly, energetic, and optimistic.
Scroll TikTok and you'll discover millions of girls praising the positive, loyal guy. In fact, #goldenretrieverboyfriend has 575 million views on the social media platform.
Devyn Simone, a dating expert at Tinder, describes the "loveable floof" as a personified character.
"She states that this is an example of seeking a partner who makes her feel safe, someone with a positive energy and attitude, and someone who is dependable."
Three indications that your date may be a "golden retriever" are:
1. They don't articulate their anxiety
A golden retriever is not perceived negatively by some personality types, according to Lisa Marie Bobby, a relationship psychologist and founder of Growing Self Counseling & Coaching in Denver. They tend to assume the best outcome of any situation.
Being preoccupied with negative thoughts, concentrating on negativity, and discussing concerns about the future are indicators that you are not with a golden retriever type of person, according to Bobby.
2. They are open to new experiences
Bobby says that stepping out of their comfort zone isn't scary or boring because they have a "willingness to go into situations that are unfamiliar or new to them," and they do so with enthusiasm.
"Perhaps you enjoy rollerblading and your partner lacks experience in it," Bobby remarks. "A golden retriever individual might respond with, 'Sure, I'll give it a try.'"
3. You don't feel pressure on the date
Simone claims that golden retrievers are capable of remaining present in the moment and do not exhibit anxiety about the potential romantic or physical outcomes of a date.
"She says that when going out on a date, there is no added pressure, allowing you to simply be and enjoy the time together to see if there is a connection."
'Golden retriever boyfriends' aren't for everyone
It's important to consider compatibility with your values before dating someone who is outgoing and optimistic.
Bobby says that someone who wants a golden retriever boyfriend has a value system that emphasizes extroversion and a willingness to try new things.
She notes that it is a "very particular type of individual."
A golden retriever boyfriend may be frustrating for someone who is more introverted, reserved, and cautious in their approach to life.
