According to InterNations' latest Expat Insider report, expats living and working in Panama are among the happiest globally.

In the 2021 report, Panama was ranked as the top country for expats among 53 nations, based on feedback from over 12,500 respondents in February regarding their satisfaction with life abroad.

In contrast to the global average of 68%, a substantial number of expats living in Panama, specifically 82%, reported being content with their lives there. The primary reasons for relocating to this Central American nation were financial, retirement, or an improved standard of living.

According to survey data, newcomers are most content with the low cost of living in the country, which they can easily cover, and 71% of them feel they are paid fairly (compared to 58% globally). Additionally, they noted that it is easy for foreigners to move to the country and find ample and affordable housing.

Across its beaches, mountains, and rainforests, many expats in their leisure time enjoyed Panama's tropical climate.

The report from InterNations ranked 53 countries based on five different indices, including quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finance, and an "expat essentials" index, which encompasses housing, administration, language, and digital life.

According to InterNations data, these are the top 10 countries for expats to live and work abroad.

  1. Panama
  2. Mexico
  3. Indonesia
  4. Spain
  5. Colombia
  6. Thailand
  7. Brazil
  8. Vietnam
  9. Philippines
  10. United Arab Emirates

Despite falling from the top spot in last year's rankings, Mexico remains No. 2 for expats in 2024. The country is highly regarded for its ease of relocation and settling in, with 86% of expats reporting a friendly and welcoming Mexican population.

Once in Mexico, expats find it easy to adapt to the local culture and make friends, making them feel at home quickly.

The main drawbacks of living in this area are dealing with local bureaucracy, banking, health-care access, and transportation.

Why Americans are relocating to Mexico City for a better life

According to a survey, Indonesia rose to third place as the best country for expats due to its low costs, friendly population, and good work-life balance, reported its residents.

Indonesia is a popular destination for expats seeking job satisfaction, personal career growth, and shorter working hours. According to respondents, their full-time workweeks typically fall just under 39 hours per week, which is lower than the global average of 42.5 hours per week.

Issues with digital life in Indonesia were reported by foreigners, resulting in low satisfaction with high-speed internet, cashless payment options, online administrative services, and access to social media.

Despite expats in Indonesia rating its health care and air quality poorly, they highly favor other aspects of quality of life such as good weather, diverse cuisine, and a vibrant nightlife.

According to the report, expats are least satisfied with their lives in Kuwait due to its low quality of life, in Turkey due to job and career challenges, and in Finland due to its high cost of living.
