A TikTok trend could negatively impact your career, warns a job coach with 15 years of experience.
Jasmine Escalera, a career coach with 15 years of experience, critically evaluates the career advice on TikTok while scrolling through it like others.
A Miami-based expert with Zety, Escalera, warns that white-fonting on your resume could be particularly damaging.
Escalera advises job seekers to use white-fonting, which involves copying a job description and pasting it onto their resume in small white text, in an attempt to outsmart applicant tracking systems (ATS) that help employers manage job candidates.
To increase your chances of being selected for an interview, make sure to include all the keywords from the job description in your application.
Resume screening platforms do not function in that manner, and Escalera warns that being discovered could endanger your job application.
"If a hiring team discovers this behavior, it could negatively impact a professional's reputation, qualifications, work, and job application."
The TikTok career advice she loves to see
Escalera argues that despite some questionable career advice on TikTok, it's not entirely negative.
"She suggests that networking is crucial for job search success, as it can move things forward much faster than simply applying to a large number of jobs out of frustration."
Applying to jobs without considering if your application, experience, and environment are suitable can be a waste of time and effort, according to Escalera, and may lead you back into a toxic or unfulfilling work environment.
Instead of using strategies that lead to anger, she suggests focusing on advice that helps build a healthy and supportive professional network.
One effective networking technique she's observed is introducing yourself to others by emphasizing your distinctive worth and the benefits you bring to work environments.
"Preparing a thorough introduction can facilitate others' comprehension of your abilities and aspirations, enabling them to better assist you," she remarks.
