A 104-year-old woman shares her secret to a long, happy life: staying active in your community. Studies support her advice.
Erline Dennis, a 104-year-old former teacher, still has an impact on her former students, many of whom are now senior adults, according to Fox 8.
Dennis said on the channel, "Occasionally, I encounter someone I haven't seen in years. Although I might have forgotten, they haven't. They remember vividly."
According to The High Point Enterprise, Dennis, who was born on July 2, 1920 in Winston-Salem, N.C., still resides in her home state and taught for many years in High Point.
Dennis values keeping family, friends, and former students in her life and is grateful for her friends' reminders to strengthen these relationships.
"The key, she believes, is to remain active and surround yourself with people," as she shared with Fox 8.
The study suggests that maintaining positive relationships, or social fitness, is the key to a long and fulfilling life.
On her 100th birthday in 2020, Dennis's friends, family, and community members organized a drive-by birthday parade for her.
At the time, WFMY News 2 reported that a reception was held for Dennis, the mayor, sheriff, county commissioner, and state representative, before the parade.
Dennis, a founding member of her church, is still active in it as of 2023 and is also a golden member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., having been a member for over 50 years.
Evelyn Williams, Dennis' friend, described her as a determined woman who was always ready to take action.
