"Trump stated in an interview with Shawn Ryan that he believes Musk wants to be involved, but given his current business commitments, he may not be able to serve in the cabinet. Trump added that he would still consider Musk for the cabinet, but he is unsure how he could manage both roles."

If Trump loses the November election against Kamala Harris, he may have an exit ramp from his alliance with Musk.
