On Wednesday, President Trump warned that he would impose significant sanctions on Russia and levy tariffs on imports from there unless a resolution was reached to end the three-year conflict in Ukraine.

On his third day as president, Trump issued a warning against Russian President Vladimir Putin via a social media post.

Trump threatened to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Russia's exports to the US and other countries if a deal is not reached soon.

Trump wrote: "End this war, which wouldn't have happened if I were President, now! We can do it the easy way or the hard way - and the easy way is always better."

"Let's make a deal now to prevent any more lives from being lost!"

If Trump were elected to a second, non-consecutive term in the White House, he claimed he could end the war in Ukraine in one day. The conflict started in February 2022 with a Russian invasion.

In May 2023, he stated, "I want the deaths of Russians and Ukrainians to stop. It will be done in 24 hours."

That did not happen on the heels of his inauguration Monday.

On Wednesday, Trump made it clear that he plans to use economic sanctions against Russia, just as he has threatened to do against U.S. allies like Mexico and Canada if they don't comply with his demands.

"I have a good relationship with President Putin and love the Russian people, despite the Radical Left's Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX. It's important to remember that Russia played a crucial role in helping us win World War II, with a heavy toll of almost 60 million lives lost."

Trump wrote: "Despite all that has been said, I am going to help Russia, whose economy is struggling, and President Putin, whom I greatly respect. Let's settle this conflict now and put an end to this senseless war!"

Expert estimates of Russian losses in World War II differ significantly from Trump's claims.

The Soviet Union suffered a total of 24 million military and civilian losses during World War II, according to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

In December, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian President, stated that his country had lost 43,000 soldiers who were killed in action and had another 370,000 wounded.

Ukraine estimated that 198,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, with more than 550,000 soldiers wounded, according to Zelenksy.
