Trump's mass deportation plan could significantly influence prices.
Inflation in the U.S. decreased in 2024, but economists caution that President-elect Donald Trump's plan for mass deportation of undocumented immigrants could have a significant impact on prices.
"David J. Bier, the director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, stated that the economic impacts will be felt, including supply chain issues and increases in prices, decreases in services."
The removal of 500,000 undocumented immigrants from the labor force could result in 44,000 U.S.-born workers losing their jobs, according to a 2023 study in the Journal of Labor Economics.
Unauthorized immigrants are more likely to work in jobs that increase the prices of goods and services, according to Chloe East, a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, who was also involved in the 2023 study.
"Based on past mass deportation efforts, it seems likely that prices for goods and services in areas where unauthorized immigrants are concentrated, such as construction and agriculture, will increase rather than decrease as a result of a mass deportation effort."
The mass deportation of undocumented immigrants could have significant economic consequences on the U.S.
