  • In his next White House term, Peter Navarro will be appointed as "Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing" by President-elect Donald Trump.
  • Navarro was previously a top trade aide for Trump during his first term.
  • Navarro was imprisoned for four months in federal prison due to disregarding a subpoena from the House select committee probing the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump, the president-elect, declared that Peter Navarro will be his "Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing" in his upcoming White House term.

Trump, 75, has appointed Navarro to help advance and communicate his manufacturing, tariff, and trade agendas.

Navarro was previously a top trade aide for Trump during his first term.

The selection came less than five months after Navarro's release from prison.

He was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress after serving a roughly four-month sentence in a federal facility in Miami for defying a congressional subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

On July 17, hours after his release, Navarro spoke at the Republican National Convention.

In his posts on Wednesday, Trump stated that Navarro had been mistreated by the Deep State.

Navarro was praised by Trump as a determined supporter of "my two sacred principles, Buy American, Hire American."

Trump's protectionist views have been staunchly defended by Navarro, who echoes his support for tariffs and wariness of trade deals backed by globalists.
