Ray Dalio says the U.S. needs a strong leader of the middle and 'broad-based prosperity'

According to Ray Dalio, the 2024 U.S. elections are likely to be the most significant of his lifetime, and he believes the country requires a "powerful leader of the middle."

On Thursday, Bridgewater Associates founder explained on CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" that the US should strive for "broad-based prosperity" and the presidential election underscores the challenges to society's smooth functioning.

"The election is going to be the most consequential of my lifetime because of the irreconcilable differences between the two sides," he said. "The first question we'll ask is whether there will be an orderly transition of power. The fact that election results may not be accepted is a possibility we must consider."

On Wednesday, Dalio referred to the elections as a significant factor influencing the global economy, characterizing it as a matter of internal equilibrium and disarray.

On Thursday, he stated to CNBC that a "win-at-all-cost mentality" poses challenges to compromising and making decisions that benefit our democracy.

While Republicans and Democrats have differing opinions on several topics, including abortion access, immigration, and climate change, voters across the board are most concerned about inflation and the high cost of living, as indicated by nationwide surveys.

Dalio stated that neither candidate in the presidential race is what the country requires.

"What the country requires is the moderates uniting to collaborate and bring about significant changes," he stated. "What the country requires is widespread prosperity."

Dalio believes that although some aspects of American society, such as universities and culture, foster innovation, these advantages only benefit a limited number of people.

He stated that a prosperous society has both order and opportunity, citing Singapore as an example. This Southeast Asian nation is renowned for its high level of education and accessible public housing.
