The UN warns that women and girls will be disproportionately affected by the Ukraine conflict.
- The UN Women executive director stated that conflicts, including the one in Ukraine, "exact the highest price from women and girls."
- Women and girls are more susceptible to sexual and gender-based violence, as well as the loss of healthcare, education, food, water, and sanitation during conflicts, according to Bahous' statement to CNBC.
During conflicts, like the one in Ukraine, women and girls are the ones who pay the "highest price," according to the executive director of U.N. Women.
On International Women's Day on Mar. 8, Sima Bahous, who became the head of the U.N body dedicated to gender equality in Sept. 2021, spoke.
During conflict, women and girls are more susceptible to sexual and gender-based violence, as well as losing access to healthcare, education, food, water, and sanitation, according to what she told CNBC's Tania Bryer.
Bahous stated that women are not just victims in crisis but also play a crucial role in carrying their families, communities, and nations from instability to stability if given the opportunity to do so.
The reason we strive to empower women in both crisis and non-crisis situations is to enable them to take on leadership roles at the negotiating table, family level, and beyond. By providing them with access, resources, support, and solidarity, we believe that women are capable of leading and bringing hope to their homes, communities, and countries.
The International Rescue Committee issued a warning on Monday that the majority of the 1.5 million refugees who have fled Ukraine since Russia's invasion are women and children, who are at a disproportionate risk of exploitation, including sexual violence and trafficking. Following this warning, Bahous made his comments.
The aid group predicts that approximately 80,000 women will give birth in the next three months in Ukraine, potentially without access to vital maternal health care if the conflict continues to disrupt essential services.
On Wednesday, an attack on a children's and maternity hospital in Mariupol led to Ukraine accusing Russia of war crimes once again.
Though a video taken after the missile strike showed a pregnant woman being carried away on a stretcher, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that pregnant women had been removed from the hospital days before the attack. In response, Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told CNBC that Moscow's leadership "live in their own reality."
CNBC reported that Bahous stated that ending the conflict is the best chance for women and girls.
Efforts to establish safe routes for citizens to flee the conflict and humanitarian aid to enter have been unsuccessful due to Russian forces continuing to attack despite cease-fires.
Bahous suggested that we all work towards ending the conflict and put on a gender lens to understand how it affects women and girls. We should come together to find a peaceful solution through negotiations, keeping women at the table.
U.N. Women has been working in Ukraine since 2015.
