The Trump campaign failed to capitalize on the Hunter Biden trial for fundraising purposes.
  • During Biden's federal criminal trial, former President Donald Trump refrained from launching any digital fundraising ads targeting Hunter Biden.
  • Trump's conviction is generating enough funds without targeting President Biden's son.
  • The conviction of Trump's campaign adviser undermines a key Trump campaign argument that the Biden administration is corruptly directing the criminal prosecutions against him.

President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, has been the target of former President Donald Trump's attacks for years, with Trump using unsubstantiated allegations of corruption to raise campaign funds.

During the 2020 presidential election, Trump used Hunter Biden, a 54-year-old lawyer and recovering drug addict, as the main focus of his campaign against Joe Biden.

Trump's attacks on Hunter Biden led to a cease-and-desist letter from Biden's attorneys, stating that Trump's constant social media rants were defamatory and could harm the younger Biden and his family.

The trial and conviction of Hunter Biden for lying on a federally mandated form while addicted to crack cocaine to purchase a Colt Cobra handgun could be a fundraising boon for the Trump campaign due to his history.

Since the trial began, Trump has not mentioned Hunter Biden on any of his fundraising platforms, according to a CNBC analysis of advertising and fundraising data.

According to Instagram's ad archive, Trump's political operation has spent over $200,000 on ads since June 1, but none of them mentioned Hunter Biden's name.

The latest Trump campaign ads on Google and YouTube do not mention Hunter Biden, and the same is true for Trump's campaign emails and text messages.

So what's going on here?

The answer appears to be a few different things.

Many Americans are familiar with someone who has faced addiction struggles. Using addiction as a means to gain support or funds is viewed negatively by voters across the board, according to Evan Siegfried, a former press aide to Rudy Giuliani's 2008 presidential campaign.

"Hunter Biden was not involved in any corruption allegations related to his father's vice presidency, as claimed by Trump and Republicans," Siegfried stated.

Trump's campaign said much the same thing.

Karoline Leavitt, Trump campaign spokeswoman, stated that the trial has been a mere distraction from the true crimes of the Biden family, which has amassed billions of dollars from China, Russia, and Ukraine.

The conviction of the sitting president's only living son weakens a crucial Trump campaign argument and a profitable fundraising tool: that the Biden administration is corruptly directing the numerous criminal investigations Trump is facing.

A Republican strategist, speaking anonymously to NBC News, stated that the Trump campaign's clear-cut argument about Biden's weaponization of the justice system was slowed by "it."

Trump's digital fundraising efforts have mainly centered on his conviction by a New York jury on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to a porn star on May 30. Despite this, Trump continues to maintain his innocence.

On June 5, Trump's team sent a text message with a statement from Lara Trump, the former president's daughter-in-law and Republican National Committee co-chair, asserting that "My father-in-law DID NOTHING WRONG."

The fundraising page declares Trump's conviction as a "slap in the face" and informs potential donors that they are the target, with Trump merely being an obstacle.

And those digital fundraising endeavors have given a boost to Trump.

Over $50 million was raised by the Trump campaign in the 24-hour period following the former president's conviction, which was announced on May 31.
