  • Kamala Harris' potential running mates possess their own fundraising abilities that could aid her in defeating Donald Trump.
  • Several individuals, including Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Mark Kelly, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Gov. Tim Walz, are being considered for a potential role.
  • On Sunday, Shapiro will travel to the Hamptons for a gathering with prominent donors.

This week, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will meet with Vice President Kamala Harris' allies at a gathering in the Hamptons, hosted by PR executive Mike Kempner, as per an invitation obtained by CNBC.

Tech giants' employees have donated money to Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., as Harris and her allies attempt to win over more supporters from that community.

Both of these potential Vice Presidential candidates share two common traits: they are being considered as running mates for Vice President Harris and can significantly contribute to her fundraising efforts before the November election.

An insider who knows about the potential running mates being considered said, "All of these VPs could succeed. They each possess unique strengths."

Several individuals were granted anonymity by CNBC to openly discuss their private fundraising efforts for Harris.

NBC News reports that besides Shapiro and Kelly, Harris's team is also evaluating Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, among others.

Since July 21, when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her, Harris' political operation has already raised over $200 million.

To maintain momentum, they may need to choose a vice presidential candidate who can boost their campaign funds to challenge former President Donald Trump.

Trump is raising big money

Despite Harris' momentum, Trump is still raising a lot of money.

On Monday, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, is being hosted by BitGo CEO Mike Belshe at a fundraiser in Silicon Valley, with tickets costing up to $50,000.

On Sunday, Trump was hosted in New Jersey for a fundraiser that raised over $10 million. Tickets for the event ranged from $3,300 to $500,000, according to the invitation. Over 300 people attended the event, one source confirmed.

In the Hamptons, Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, plans to host a Trump fundraiser next month, with an expected minimum raise of $10 million, according to a source.

The funds for these events are being directed to the Trump 47 Committee, a joint committee that supports the campaign, the Republican National Committee, and numerous state parties.

The Federal Election Commission will receive the mandatory quarterly report from the Trump campaign on Oct. 15, which includes the estimates provided by people close to the campaign, but CNBC cannot confirm these estimates yet.

The financials of the Harris campaign cannot be independently verified until Aug. 20, when her campaign discloses them. Additionally, her associated committees must file federal disclosures by Oct. 15.

The Harris campaign confirmed that Vice President Harris has instructed her team to initiate the process of evaluating prospective running mates in response to a request for comment.

"The process has commenced and we anticipate no further updates until the Vice President reveals her running mate and successor as Vice President of the United States."

A CNBC request for comment from a Trump campaign spokesperson was not responded to.

Shapiro hits the Hamptons

On Sunday, Kempner's home in Water Mill will host a lunch with top party donors, showcasing Shapiro's fundraising strengths.

Kamala Harris has the support of many Governors and Senators who are ready to work with her to lead the nation with practical, reasonable, and rational solutions, according to an email obtained by CNBC.

"Josh Shapiro is a fantastic person and you will be inspired by what he has to say," wrote Kempner.

The invitation for the event does not mention a campaign fundraiser, but includes a donation link for Shapiro's 2026 statewide reelection campaign.

Pennsylvania statewide races witnessed new fundraising and spending records during Shapiro's 2022 gubernatorial campaign.

Mike Bloomberg, a billionaire who supports gun safety reforms, contributed $1 million to Shapiro's campaign, while Jennifer Duda, a longtime Democratic donor from California, also donated $3 million to Shapiro's campaign, according to campaign finance records.

Some of Vice President Harris' allies are planning to approach former New York Mayor Bloomberg for his support, although Bloomberg has not yet publicly endorsed Harris.

According to Forbes, Bloomberg's net worth is over $100 billion. However, a spokesperson for Bloomberg did not respond to a request for comment. Similarly, Duda did not respond to emails seeking comment.

Shapiro, a moderate contender to be Harris' running mate, supported a Republican-backed state plan to provide $100 million in private school tuition and supplies. However, the plan was ultimately abandoned.

Although Shapiro has acknowledged Palestinian suffering, he has taken a pro-Israel stance in its 10 month war on Hamas in Gaza. Additionally, he is an advocate for gun reform legislation.

The governor's representative declined to provide a comment to CNBC.

Kelly's tech ties

Unlike most of Harris' potential running mates, the Arizona senator has a record of support from the tech sector when it comes to fundraising.

In an effort to emulate Trump's success with Silicon Valley donors, Harris' allies have been seeking financial support from the tech industry.

As a senator, Kelly has advocated for technology investments in Arizona, particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border. Kelly and fellow Arizona senator Kyrsten Sinema were thrilled when Amkor Technology Inc., an Arizona-based company, received $400 million from the CHIPS and Science Act.

Over $1.5 million was donated to Kelly's 2022 reelection campaign by employees from , , , AT&T, and . According to OpenSecrets, Kelly's campaign raised almost $90 million in total.

Despite having supporters in the tech sector, Kelly faced opposition from some detractors last year when he proposed a bill mandating internet giants to contribute to the Federal Communications Commission's universal service fund program, as reported by Broadband Breakfast.

A representative from Kelly declined to respond to a request for comment from CNBC.

Walz has strong union support

Few of Harris' potential running mates have stronger ties to unions than Walz.

The National Education Association, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and International Brotherhood of Teamsters have consistently donated to Walz's Congressional campaigns since 2005, as shown on the Follow The Money campaign finance website.

For years, Walz, a former union member and high school teacher, has been advocating for the significance of organized labor.

Some Silicon Valley and Wall Street Democratic donors believe organized labor wields too much power in the party's broader coalition, which could make it harder for Walz to win their support.

Walz's representative declined to provide a comment when contacted by CNBC.

Buttigieg has his own fundraising network

Since the 2020 Democratic primary, Buttigieg has maintained a national fundraising network. After dropping out of the race, he established a political action committee called Win the Era.

The PAC remained active after he was confirmed as transportation secretary, with over $1 million cash on hand heading into July, according to Federal Election Commission records. His primary campaign for president raised almost $100 million, according to OpenSecrets. He too received donations from those working in tech.

The Biden campaign has benefited from that network, which is now run by Harris, according to a source.

Since May 2023, Buttigieg and his network have helped the campaign raise around $7 million.

"Pete Buttigieg's donors still work together, even without being asked, to rally for the Harris team," the person explained.

A spokesperson for the Transportation Department did not return a request for comment.
