The Harris campaign announces a small business battleground tour targeting Latino and Black voters.
  • This week, at least six battleground states will see campaign stops by surrogates for the Harris campaign, as announced in a preview obtained by CNBC.
  • The "Small Business for Harris-Walz" campaign tour aims to win over Black and Latino voters, who were crucial to Democrats' 2020 victory but have shifted towards Donald Trump in this election cycle.
  • The campaign will emphasize the differences between Harris and Trump while showcasing the vice president's plans, such as offering small businesses a $50,000 startup tax deduction.

This week, Harris campaign surrogates will visit small businesses in at least six battleground states, as announced by CNBC on Tuesday.

Harris will not attend these events, but the campaign said elected officials and community leaders will replace her, without specifying the surrogates.

The "Small Business for Harris-Walz" campaign tour aims to win over Black and Latino voters, who were crucial to the Democrats' 2020 victory but have shifted towards Republican nominee Donald Trump in this election cycle.

Trump has been working to capitalize on that momentum.

At a Georgia rally last Tuesday, he stated, "Thank you very much, Black and Hispanic voters, for voting for Trump. You'll be in good shape."

The Harris campaign's latest effort to counter Trump's gains is this week's small business tour.

Before dropping out of the presidential race in July, President Joe Biden employed a similar strategy as he had planned to do when he was expected to be the Democratic nominee.

In December, he emphasized the success of Black-owned and Latino-owned small businesses under his administration as a means to demonstrate his efforts to bridge the racial wealth gap and attract voters who yearned for the pre-pandemic economy that Trump managed.

Harris is using that argument in her campaign to distinguish herself from her Republican opponent.

"Richard Garcia, the Harris campaign's small business engagement director, stated on Tuesday that Vice President Harris has demonstrated her commitment to supporting small businesses, in contrast to former President Trump who prioritized his own interests."

The Harris campaign will target small businesses in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania with a specific pitch over the next week. The campaign will organize events such as house parties, volunteer trainings, and organizing events to promote their message.

Harris has proposed increasing the tax deduction for small businesses' startup expenses from $5,000 to $50,000 and reducing the long-term capital gains tax rate from Biden's proposed 40% to 28%, in order to incentivize investment in America's innovators, founders, and small businesses.
