The GOP is predicted to gain a House majority, securing a Republican trifecta.
  • Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives, NBC News projects.
  • The Republican Party has regained control of the Senate and brought Donald Trump back to the presidency, securing a governing trifecta.
  • The Congress, controlled by a single party, will have numerous important legislative matters to address, such as whether to renew the $3.3 trillion Tax Cuts & Jobs Act.

The House of Representatives will remain under Republican control, according to NBC News projections, ensuring a GOP trifecta with the White House and the Senate.

After President-elect Donald Trump claimed a decisive victory against Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election and Republicans flipped control of the Senate, the GOP is projected to win.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., can retain his job through the Republican victory, but he must first be reelected by his colleagues in the House.

With the election approaching, House Republicans aimed to increase their slim majority. They were working with 220 Republican seats and 212 Democrat seats, including three vacancies.

The GOP majority's slender margin gave Democrats hope to take control of the chamber. They needed to gain four seats to do so, as the vacancies reduced the chamber's total votes to less than 435.

In the 25 toss-up House races rated by the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Democrats outraised Republicans, except for one race, according to an NBC News analysis of October campaign finance data. Additionally, Democrats outspent Republicans in crucial races from July through September.

Despite their significant fundraising efforts, Democrats were unable to prevent the red wave.

In Pennsylvania's 8th and 7th House Districts, Republicans Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie, respectively, defeated incumbent Democratic Reps. Matt Cartwright and Susan Wild in two closely contested races.

In Michigan's 7th Congressional District, Republican Tom Barret won an open seat that was previously held by Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who won a Senate seat in Michigan.

The Congress, controlled by a single party, will have numerous crucial issues to address, such as whether to renew the $3.3 trillion Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, which is set to expire in the coming year. Trump has previously stated that he intends not only to extend the tax breaks but also pursue more significant reductions.

The Affordable Care Act's enhanced subsidies, which expire in 2025, are up for renewal in Congress, along with a looming debt ceiling fight.
