The FCC has banned AI-generated voices in robocalls to prevent voter deception.
The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday banned robocalls that use artificial intelligence voices, signaling that using the technology to deceive people and manipulate voters will not be tolerated.
The ruling, made by all members, prohibits robocalls that use AI voice-cloning technology under the 1991 Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which restricts junk calls that use artificial and pre-recorded voice messages.
New Hampshire authorities are intensifying their investigation into AI-generated robocalls that imitated President Joe Biden's voice to dissuade voters from participating in the state's primary election last month.
The FCC has been granted the authority to penalize companies that incorporate AI voices in their calls and to prohibit service providers from carrying them. This new regulation also enables call recipients to initiate legal action and provides state attorneys general with a new tool to combat offenders, as per the FCC.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel stated in a news release that fraudsters are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters. She added that the FCC is taking action to put a stop to these robocalls.
