On Monday, Steve Bannon, a former aide to Donald Trump, started serving a four-month prison sentence for disregarding a congressional subpoena.

According to NBC News, Bannon arrived at the federal correctional institution in Danbury, Conn. at approximately 12:00 p.m.

In July 2022, a federal jury in Washington, D.C. convicted Steve Bannon of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to testify and provide documents to the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

After a federal appeals court panel upheld Bannon's conviction in May, a federal judge in early June ordered him to report to jail by July 1.

The appeals court rejected Bannon's defense that he was not guilty of contempt because his lawyers advised him not to comply with the congressional subpoena, citing the possibility of executive privilege.

The Supreme Court rejected Bannon's last-ditch effort to avoid jail time on Friday, issuing a one-sentence order denying his request.

A mixed crowd of supporters and protesters greeted Bannon when he arrived at a press conference across the street from the federal correctional institution in Danbury.

Before beginning his prison sentence, he stated to reporters that he was "proud" and had "no regrets" about going to prison.

The Jan. 6 committee has jailed a second former Trump official, Bannon, who served as chief strategist in the Trump White House until August 2017, for disregarding its subpoena.

In June 2022, Peter Navarro, a former Trump advisor, was indicted by a federal grand jury for not complying with a subpoena from a committee. He is currently serving a four-month sentence in a federal prison in Miami, as the Supreme Court denied a similar appeal from him in April.

This weekend, Vaugh Hillyard of NBC News interviewed Steve Bannon, who reiterated his stance that the subpoenas issued by the Jan. 6 committee are meaningless and talked about his impending imprisonment.

"He stated that he would spend part of his day fulfilling his obligations in prison to adhere to the rules and regulations, while the remaining time would be devoted to ensuring President Trump's re-election with complete effort."

Bannon will be released from jail on Oct. 31, five days before Election Day, as per his statement to NBC News.
