Russia could view Trump's interest in Greenland as a positive development.
- Russia may support President-elect Donald Trump's territorial ambitions in Greenland, despite Denmark's opposition.
- Moscow's expansionist ambitions were reportedly supported by prominent Russian pundits, who said the move would validate their views.
- On Monday, Trump declared that his son Donald Trump Jr. was visiting the island unexpectedly.
Russia appears to be supporting U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's pursuit of Greenland, despite Denmark's sovereignty over the Arctic island.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's high-profile political pundits have expressed their support for Trump's plan to buy Greenland and expand U.S. territory, stating that such a move would validate other countries' expansionist territorial ambitions, particularly Russia's.
In December, Trump reiterated his claim that Greenland's ownership is crucial for the U.S.' economic and national security, repeating his demand for the island that he made during his first term as president.
On Tuesday, Trump reiterated his earlier comments and stated that he would not rule out using force to acquire Greenland and the Panama Canal. Additionally, he has proposed turning Canada into a state and renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The European Union will not tolerate attacks on its sovereign borders, as France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot condemned Trump's comments in Europe on Wednesday.
'Might is right'
Russian state media and political figures have largely given the president-elect's position a positive reception in Moscow.
On his primetime show, Russian TV presenter and Kremlin ally Vladimir Solovyov stated that Trump's stance on his comments about the Baltic nations of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia essentially granted Moscow the authority to demand the restoration of its former Soviet empire.
Russia's decision to launch a "special military operation" against Ukraine was validated by other pro-Kremlin pundits on the panel, who said that Trump's ambitions aligned with Russia's interests. Solovyov, a Kremlin propagandist and supporter of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, commented that Trump's actions were beneficial to Russia and that he was "totally destroying any illusions that anyone might have still had about the summit of democracies, about respecting opinions of NATO allies."
He said, "You're all nobodies, but I'll talk to Putin and Xi Jinping. Who are you? Deliver Greenland. He's a great guy, an awesome guy," he added.
The Kremlin has been contacted by CNBC for comment on Trump's stance, and they are currently waiting for a response.
Russia's leadership is likely interested in Trump's proposals, regardless of their feasibility, analysts say. This is because Russia has already demonstrated its willingness to disregard international law and territorial sovereignty in pursuit of its own geopolitical objectives, as seen in its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Russian propagandists and state media are delighted to report on Trump's extraterritorial threats and unilateral aggression desires, as those are things they themselves have promoted when Putin has pursued them, according to Max Hess, a fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and author of "Economic War: Ukraine and the Global Conflict Between Russia and the West," who spoke to CNBC on Wednesday.
Trump's stance on Russian politics may encourage Russia's leadership to pursue more expansionist policies.
According to Timothy Ash, an emerging markets strategist at BlueBay Asset Management, the West has conveyed that Putin's invasion of Ukraine and territorial land grab is illegal and goes against international law. The same message has been communicated to Israel regarding expanding settlements. Furthermore, the message to China has been to not interpret Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a green light for a similar invasion of Taiwan, as they should anticipate severe international consequences.
Yesterday, Trump's pantomime performance conveyed that great powers possess "spheres of influence," as Trump believes, which aligns with Putin's worldview. However, Ash cautioned that Trump's comments have significantly weakened NATO.
'Make Greenland Great Again'
The Kremlin is closely monitoring Trump's comments about Greenland, which is situated between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean, given its own growing interests in the Arctic region, where it has been expanding its political, economic, and military influence in recent years.
Greenland, although an autonomous region of Denmark, has connections to the U.S. due to American military installations constructed on the island after World War II. During the war, Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, leading to an agreement in 1941 between Copenhagen and the U.S. that granted the U.S. control over Greenland's defense.
The Danish government has consistently rejected Trump's proposal to buy Greenland, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen calling it "absurd" in 2019.
Greenland reiterated its stance against being sold by Trump in December, with Prime Minister Mute Egede stating that Greenland belongs to its people and will not be sold.
Recently, Denmark has taken steps to assert its control over Greenland, which may have been prompted by Trump's statements.
In response to Trump's comments in December, Copenhagen increased its defense spending in Greenland to strengthen its presence in the Arctic. On Monday, it was announced that Denmark's King Frederik X had updated his historic coat of arms to give Greenland and the Faroe Islands greater symbolic prominence and assert them as a central part of the Danish realm.
Despite Greenland and Denmark's rejection, Trump declared on Monday that his son Donald Trump Jr. was visiting the island unexpectedly.
Trump announced on Truth Social that he will be sending his son, Don Jr, and other representatives to visit Greenland. He stated that Greenland is a magnificent place and that it will benefit greatly if it becomes part of the United States. Trump pledged to protect and cherish Greenland from any threats from the outside world. He concluded by saying, "MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"
On Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. traveled to Greenland, but no government meetings were scheduled.
The Danish foreign ministry stated to NBC News that they have taken note of Donald Trump Jr.'s planned visit to Greenland. Since it is not an official American visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark has no further comment on the matter.
