The Conservative Party, led by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, suffered another double by-election loss on Thursday, indicating that the Labour Party's momentum continues unabated.

In Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, Labour experienced a 28.5% vote swing, which was their second-largest since 1945, resulting in 45.9% of the vote. In contrast, the Conservatives obtained a 24.6% result.

After being re-elected with a majority of 18,000 in 2019, veteran Conservative MP Peter Bone was removed from parliament due to allegations of serial bullying and sexually inappropriate behavior. He denied the claims.

The Conservative candidate was Bone’s partner, Helen Harrison.

Since 2001, Labour will now hold the seat. Gen Kitchen, the winning candidate, stated that the outcome was a "stunning victory for the Labour Party and must send a message from Northamptonshire to Downing Street."

In Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, Labour won the by-election with a 16.4% vote swing, overturning a Conservative majority of 11,220.

In January, the seat was left vacant after former Conservative MP Chris Skidmore resigned in protest of the Conservative Party's plan to grant new oil and gas licenses in the North Sea.

The new Labour MP for Kingswood, Damien Egan, stated that there is still much work to be done and pledged to restore the future of the constituency.

The ruling party suffered another defeat in a by-election, marking the latest in a series of unfavorable results in previously safe seats.

In October, Labour won by-elections in Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth, while the Conservatives lost seats in Selby and Ainsty and the Liberal Democrats took Somerton and Frome in June.

On Friday, Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, informed the BBC that the results of the recent by-elections indicated that the nation yearns for change, yet there is still much to be accomplished.

Last night, it was evident that we were gaining Tory switchers, or individuals who had not previously voted for Labour, by voting for us in a by-election.

The Conservatives trail the Labour Party by more than 20 points in all national polls, with a general election scheduled for no later than January 2025.

Since Boris Johnson led the Conservatives to a substantial majority in the 2019 General Election, they have lost 10 by-elections in a single parliamentary term, which is more than any government since the 1960s.

The U.K. economy entered a recession in the second half of 2023, with growth of just 0.1% for the year, as new data revealed. Despite this, inflation persisted in putting a strain on household finances as the country tries to overcome its ongoing cost of living crisis.

According to Robert Ford, a professor of political science at the University of Manchester, the results indicate that the Labour Party is on track for a significant victory in the upcoming general election, as seen in previous by-elections.
