Since President Joe Biden announced his selection of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court, Democrats have been raising large sums of money.
Over $1 million in donations was recorded on ActBlue, the digital fundraising site of the party, after Biden's tweet this morning confirmed reports that he would nominate Jackson to the nation's highest court. If confirmed, Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve on the bench.
In the hours after Biden's 10 a.m. ET tweet confirming Jackson's nomination to replace Breyer, ActBlue recorded over $100,000 in donations. Biden and Jackson spoke to the nation Friday afternoon.
An online fundraising platform for Democratic donors, ActBlue, allows individuals to contribute money to campaigns, political action committees, or nonprofit organizations. However, a representative from ActBlue refused to provide any comment.
Democratic groups have been campaigning for Jackson's nomination on social media, which they use to raise funds. Democrats may feel compelled to use their financial resources to counter potential Republican opposition to Jackson's nomination.
The Senate is evenly divided between the two parties, and the Democrats need a slim majority to approve Jackson's nomination. Several Republican senators, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, have already voiced opposition to Jackson's confirmation as a circuit judge.
The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative dark money group, was already launching a $2.5 million ad campaign against Democrats and Biden for their potential Supreme Court nomination. The group is led by allies of conservative judicial activist and advisor Leonard Leo and does not reveal its donors.
Immediately after Jackson's nomination, Demand Justice, a progressive group, promoted her on its Facebook page and encouraged people to contact their senators to urge them to confirm her quickly. The group has since launched a $1 million ad campaign in support of Jackson's nomination. The first ad features former Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan praising Jackson, despite their familial relationship. The campaign will run on national and Washington D.C.-based cable channels and include digital ads.
The Democratic Party's committees, including the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, have endorsed Jackson's nomination on their Facebook pages.
The DNC, DSCC, and Demand Justice did not respond to requests for comment on the amount of money they raised after the official announcement of Jackson's nomination.
