In her speech at the third night of the Democratic National Convention, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi emphasized the importance of not forgetting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, which she referred to as a "perilous moment for our democracy."

No president of the United States had ever so brazenly assaulted the bedrock of our democracy, so gleefully embraced political violence, or so willfully betrayed his oath of office, she said.

"Pelosi paused and then said, "He did!" referring to former President Donald Trump, who assaulted democracy on January 6th. But she quickly added, "We did!" as she emphasized the role of those who saved democracy that day."

On January 6, 2021, as House Speaker, Pelosi witnessed a violent mob of Trump supporters storm the Capitol in an attempt to halt the certification of Electoral College votes, which would ultimately declare Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

The January 6th parable highlights the importance of the courage and commitment of those responsible for maintaining our democracy. We must elect leaders who uphold the principles of free and fair elections and respect the peaceful transfer of power.

"Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are the clear leaders."

Since 1987, Pelosi has represented a San Francisco district in the House for nearly 40 years, while Harris previously served as the city's district attorney, then California's attorney general and then its U.S. senator.

"Pelosi stated that she has known Kamala Harris for many years and considers her a person of deep faith, as evidenced by her community involvement, compassion, and dedication to service."

She is a leader of strength, with wisdom and eloquence on policy, and has recently been fighting for women's right to choose.

Pelosi is a renowned political strategist who has successfully guided numerous landmark bills through the House, including the Affordable Care Act, Dodd-Frank banking regulations, the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell," and the Inflation Reduction Act.

"She stated that Harris is politically astute and strategic in winning difficult elections, quickly securing the nomination with dignity and grace and choosing Tim Walz as our vice president."

Coming from Pelosi, this was very high praise for Harris.

Pelosi's role in the replacement of the Democratic nominee for president last month was subtly acknowledged in a nod.

Pelosi's actions led to Biden's decision not to run for reelection on July 21. In her remarks, Pelosi thanked the president for his contributions to Democratic victories in the past four years, stating that these successes were a result of Biden's "patriotic vision of a fairer America."
