  • On CNBC's "Squawk Box," Sen. JD Vance of Ohio stated that 25 million unauthorized immigrants have entered the U.S. and that Kamala Harris is responsible for the issue.
  • According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and estimates from government agencies and other organizations, Vance's figure overstates the facts.
  • Donald Trump's running mate, Vance, argued that immigration to the U.S. has negative effects on the labor market.

On Thursday, JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, made a questionable statement about immigration, accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of being responsible for the increase in undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers entering the United States.

On CNBC's "Squawk Box," Vance, the Ohio senator and former President Donald Trump's running mate, stated that the Democratic presidential nominee has brought 25 million illegal aliens into the country.

According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and estimates from government agencies and other organizations that track border crossings and asylum claims, Vance's figure is significantly higher than the actual number of asylum seekers.

In an Aug. 28 speech in Wisconsin, Vance asserted that Harris had allowed 25 million illegal aliens to enter the country. He further stated that these 25 million individuals were currently residing in the country unlawfully.

Neither the Trump campaign nor Vance's spokesman responded to CNBC's inquiries about the origin of the senator's figures.

Vance's numbers don't align with the available data on U.S. immigration policy enforcement.

As of January 1, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Homeland Security Statistics estimated that 11 million unauthorized immigrants were residing in the U.S.

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. increased from 10.5 million in January 2020 to a total marked a decline from an estimated 11.6 million unauthorized immigrants in 2010, according to the office.

In March, the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute estimated that there were approximately 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States in 2021, an increase from 11 million in 2019.

Michelle Mittelstadt, MPI's communications director, stated in June to the Poynter Institute that several organizations with a history of issuing authoritative data through rigorous methodologies estimate the unauthorized population to be within the 11 million range, following a similar claim made by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

In July 2022, Pew Research Center estimated that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the United States reached 11.0 million.

No national survey in the United States, including the U.S. Census, gathers information on the legal status of foreign-born residents residing in the country.

Nearly 10.2 million total encounters were reported by CBP from February 2021 to July 2024.

Nearly 2.5 million people were turned away under Title 42, the pandemic-era immigration restrictions that ended May 2023, according to CBP's data.

Numerous of CBP's reported border encounters involve individuals who had previously attempted to enter the U.S. within the past year.

Vance refuted recent findings from investment firms like Goldman Sachs, stating that immigration has had a positive effect on the U.S. economy and the labor market, during his remarks on Thursday morning.

According to Vance, communities like Springfield, Ohio, with a population of 20,000 Haitians, have been led by what he has observed.

"The cost of housing is unattainable, and the prevalence of communicable diseases is increasing, making it difficult for individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle in this small Ohio town."

"If the path to prosperity was flooding your nation with high-wage immigrants, then Springfield, Ohio would be ... the least prosperous city in the world," Vance said. "America would be the least prosperous country in the world, because Kamala Harris has flooded the country with 25 million legal aliens."

Noteworthy is Vance's choice to bring attention to Springfield: The city has gained national attention following Trump and Vance's promotion of a baseless far-right conspiracy theory about Haitian immigrants stealing and consuming Springfield residents' pets.

Trump repeated the claim during his presidential debate against Harris on Tuesday night.
