  • Ukrainian officials stated that more than 40 missiles were launched by Russian forces, causing significant damage to a children's hospital in Kyiv.
  • Zelenskyy stated that Russia cannot deny knowledge of its missiles' flight paths and must be fully responsible for its actions.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense denied allegations of intentional missile attacks on civilian areas.

At least 31 people were killed and 125 others were injured in a rare large-scale daytime attack by Russian missiles across Ukraine, which also seriously damaged a key children's hospital, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to the Kyiv city military administration, Russian forces launched over 40 aerial missiles at cities including Kyiv, Dnipro, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Kryvi Rih.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that at least 20 people died and 61 were injured in Kyiv. The Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv sustained significant damage, prompting patients to be transferred to other medical facilities in the city. It is unclear whether the hospital was directly hit or struck by missile debris.

The Kyiv Mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, announced on Telegram that a doctor and another adult had died in a medical facility. He also stated that 16 people were injured in the hospital, with seven of them being children.

"This is horror and genocide!" Klitschko said.

In addition to Kryvy Rih, other regions reported fatalities, including Dnipro and Pokrovsk, as declared by regional heads.

Ukrainian officials shared pictures of devastation, but CNBC could not verify the casualty figures and they may change as rescue operations continue.

"Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv is one of the most important children's hospitals in Europe, having saved and restored the health of thousands of children. Zelenskyy stated that Russia cannot claim ignorance of where its missiles are flying and must be held fully accountable for all its crimes against people, children, and humanity in general."

The Russian Ministry of Defense denied allegations of intentional missile strikes on civilian sites, stating that its forces responded to Ukrainian hostilities with a large-scale attack on Ukrainian military facilities and air bases using long-range precision weapons.

The strike's objectives were accomplished. The designated facilities were targeted, according to the defense ministry's statement.

NATO summit ahead

On the eve of a NATO summit in Washington, where allies are expected to provide additional military support for Ukraine, Zelenskyy met with Polish Prime Minister Tusk in Warsaw to reaffirm Poland's commitment to Kyiv.

Zelenskyy stated that the Polish and Ukrainian leaders signed a security cooperation agreement that includes a provision for shooting down Russian missiles and drones in Ukraine's airspace that are fired in the direction of Poland.

"We will always be there for you in this struggle," Tusk stated on social media, as per Google translation.

Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, is visiting the Kremlin for the first time since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. He will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen ties, despite Russia being isolated or sanctioned by international peers.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who took over the rotating presidency of the European Union on July 1, has embarked on a "peace mission" to negotiate a cease-fire in the Ukrainian conflict. Despite his efforts, he has faced criticism from EU officials for his outreach to Putin.

On Monday, Orban had a meeting with China's close ally, President Xi Jinping, in Beijing.

"I met with President Xi in Beijing to discuss the conditions for peace in the Russia-Ukraine War, two months after his visit to Budapest," Orban said on social media.

Today, President Xi conveyed to me that China will persist in its efforts to establish the necessary conditions for peace.

In February 2023, China proposed a peace plan for the conflict in Ukraine, which, like Zelenskyy's own plan and Putin's recent conditions for truce talks, has not yet gained momentum.
