On Thursday, a court ruled that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is officially disbarred from practicing law in the nation's capital due to his efforts to overturn Donald Trump's 2020 election loss based on false claims of widespread fraud.

The recent ruling by a three-judge panel on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals is the latest setback for the 80-year-old man, who was disbarred in New York just two months ago.

In a one-page order made public Thursday morning, the judges of D.C.'s highest court disbarred Rudolph W. Giuliani from practicing law in the District of Columbia.

Giuliani's representative did not promptly respond to CNBC's inquiry for a statement.

In July 2021, Giuliani's law license was suspended in D.C. due to ongoing disciplinary proceedings in New York.

In 2023, a New York appeals court ruled that Giuliani had "abused his position as Trump's personal attorney" to spread false and sometimes "perjurious" claims about the 2020 election in various courts.

The court found that Giuliani intentionally violated fundamental legal principles and actively contributed to the national conflict following the 2020 presidential election, for which he remains unapologetic.

In 2023, a disciplinary panel in Washington D.C. had already recommended that Giuliani be disbarred due to his false claims about the election.

"The panel ruled that Giuliani, who made claims of massive election fraud without evidence, forfeited his right to practice law by prosecuting the case. He should be disbarred."

On July 25, the D.C. court of appeals instructed Giuliani to justify why he should not be disbarred in response to the New York appellate court's decision.

The D.C. judges wrote Thursday that Giuliani apparently did not file a response to that order.

Trump's ally Giuliani has been indicted in Georgia and Arizona for his role in challenging Biden's 2020 election win. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

In July, a New York federal bankruptcy judge rejected Giuliani's Chapter 11 case, intensifying his ongoing financial struggles, which include owing a substantial civil defamation settlement to two Georgia election officials.
