Estonia's chief of defense advises that NATO should take action if Russia employs weapons of mass destruction.
- The alliance, comprising 30 members, has not yet deployed troops on the ground, as there is a concern that doing so may provoke a conflict with nuclear-powered Russia, potentially leading to a global war.
- Ukraine has been accused by Russia of running chemical and biological weapons labs with U.S support, which has been rejected by both Ukrainian and Western officials.
- The West suspects that Moscow may have fabricated and used chemical weapons against Ukraine as a pretext for its own actions.
Estonia's chief of defense has stated that NATO should intervene in the Russia-Ukraine war if Moscow uses weapons of mass destruction against Estonia.
Although NATO has provided lethal weapons and military equipment to Ukraine to defend against Russia's attacks, the alliance has not yet deployed troops on the ground due to concerns that it may provoke a nuclear power and lead to a third world war.
If fears over the potential use of chemical weapons were later realized, NATO's position might change.
Lt. Gen. Martin Herem, chief of the Estonian Defense Forces, stated that if Russia employs weapons of mass destruction in the conflict, it should prompt NATO to intervene, according to a response given on Wednesday.
Ukraine has been accused by Russia of operating chemical and biological weapons laboratories with U.S support, which has been denied by Ukrainian and Western officials. However, there are concerns that Russia may be fabricating these accusations as a pretext to use its own chemical weapons against Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Kusti Salm, Estonian Ministry of Defense's permanent secretary, stated that Russia is "obviously" preparing the groundwork for the possibility of using chemical weapons.
He stated that they were using their rhetoric to create context for something to happen, and it would be naive to assume there was no end goal involved.
The narrative of this is also part of the escalatory ladder. As a result, they are increasing the temperature, which is already causing fear without the use of weapons.
‘False flag operation’
On Tuesday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed concerns that Russia might use chemical weapons in a false flag operation.
Stoltenberg expressed concern about Russia's false accusations at a news conference, stating that they "make us a bit concerned about the possibility that they are actually planning to use chemical weapons."
The president of the United States and other allies made it clear that if they use chemical weapons, there will be consequences. However, I will not speculate about any military response from NATO except for stating that NATO's primary responsibility is to defend and protect all allies.
