Biden: We would respond if Putin uses chemical weapons against Ukraine

If Russia employs weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine, NATO will respond with the same kind of action, as stated by President Joe Biden on Thursday.

Biden stated that our response to Russian President Putin's use of it will depend on the nature of the use.

After a series of meetings with the European Union, G-7 partners, and NATO allies, the president delivered a speech.

Biden stated that he would back an initiative to remove Russia from the G-20 economic forum.

The president refused to confirm whether the US has proof that China has aided Russia in circumventing sanctions or illegally obtained American advanced technology.

Biden stated that he believes China recognizes its economic future is more closely linked to the West than to Russia. As a result, he expressed hope that Chinese President Xi Jinping does not become involved in any conflict.

Biden discussed with NATO leaders the need for a system to review sanctions violations and "where, when, and how" Russia can purchase prohibited products with NATO and the EU.

Biden stated that the purpose of the NATO meeting was to ensure that the alliance continues its actions for the next month and beyond, in order to prevent Putin from taking advantage of any weaknesses.

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary-General, stated on Wednesday that the use of chemical weapons would alter the course of the conflict in Ukraine.

Stoltenberg stated that the use of such weapons would be a clear violation of international law and could have severe consequences, affecting not only the country in question but also NATO member nations nearby.

Stoltenberg announced that the NATO alliance will soon provide Ukraine with equipment to safeguard against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons. However, he refused to disclose the specific type of support the alliance would offer to maintain operational secrecy.

Previously, Russia employed chemical weapons in various conflicts, such as in Syria, against Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, and against former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in London.

Putin has been increasingly hinting at the possibility of using chemical or biological weapons to eliminate entire cities in Ukraine and force the country to surrender due to his frustration with slow progress.

Earlier this week, Biden cautioned that Putin was falsely accusing the U.S. and Ukraine of using biological or chemical weapons to justify Russia's own attack on Ukraine.

In an interview on Tuesday, Biden stated that Russia's history of accusing others of actions they are already doing or about to do is a form of projection, which is very concerning.

In Brussels, Biden stated that the US allies had achieved all three of his primary objectives during the NATO meeting.

Biden stated that the first objective was to aid Ukraine with both military and humanitarian support. The second goal was to impose a significant economic sanctions regime to cripple Putin's economy and punish him for his actions. Lastly, the aim was to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO allies, who were concerned and worried about the potential consequences.

The White House declared that the US will impose sanctions on around 400 Russian individuals and organizations, including over 300 Duma lawmakers and Russian elites, earlier in the day.

The G-7 and the EU declared new measures to combat Russian attempts to circumvent existing sanctions, specifically targeting its central bank.

Biden declared new initiatives to aid Ukraine and countries that rely on its grain production, which is at risk due to the Russian invasion, in addition to imposing punitive measures against Russia.

Biden announced that the U.S. is ready to provide over $1 billion in humanitarian aid to assist the millions of Ukrainians impacted by the conflict in Ukraine.

Biden announced that many Ukrainian refugees will want to remain in Europe, near their homes, but will also welcome 100,000 Ukrainians to the United States, with a focus on reuniting families. Additionally, the US will invest $320 million dollars to strengthen democratic resilience and protect human rights in Ukraine and neighboring countries.

The Biden administration will allocate $11 billion over the next five years through the U.S. government's feed the future initiative to combat threats to food security and reduce malnutrition.

A significant portion of Ukraine's grain exports are directed towards Africa and Asia, and the American funds will be allocated to countries with high populations that are at risk of food price increases.
