  • On Saturday, President Joe Biden conversed with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
  • Biden's legacy was negatively impacted by his debate performance against Trump in June, as Pelosi informed him.
  • On Sunday, Biden declared on social media that he was withdrawing from the presidential race and was backing Kamala Harris.

On Saturday, Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker, discussed with President Biden the impact of his poor debate performance against Donald Trump on his legacy, as confirmed by a reliable source.

The day after, Biden declared on social media that he was withdrawing from the race and backed Vice President Kamala Harris.

The source described the phone call between the two as "cordial," but it's unclear if they spoke on Sunday, the day Biden made his decision to leave the race. The source was granted anonymity to speak freely about the private conversation.

According to NBC News, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader and a Democrat from New York, had a conversation with Biden this afternoon.

Biden announced to his senior team at 1:45 pm on Sunday that he had changed his mind about staying in the race, according to a source who spoke with NBC News. Prior to this, Biden had stated that he had no plans to drop out of the race, despite calls from Democrats in both the House and Senate for him to exit the race.

After dropping out of the race, Pelosi praised Biden in a statement, but press representatives for both Pelosi and Biden did not respond to requests for comment.

"Pelosi praised Biden on Sunday, stating that his legacy of vision, values, and leadership make him one of the most consequential Presidents in American history. She expressed love and gratitude for Biden's unwavering belief in the promise of America and his commitment to providing opportunities for people to achieve their full potential."

After Biden's debate with Trump, Pelosi received a call from the former House speaker, who reportedly informed her that polling showed Biden could not defeat Trump and that staying in the race could harm the Democrats' chances of winning the House in November.

It remains unclear if Pelosi will endorse Harris.
