Biden's insulin price cap is being praised by Trump.
- Despite the lower price of insulin under President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump attempted to claim credit for it.
- In recent voter surveys, Biden has outperformed Trump on the issue of health care.
- Trump spent much of his presidency attempting to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which provides coverage to approximately 45 million Americans, without proposing a substitute healthcare plan.
On Saturday, former President Donald Trump acknowledged that the cost of insulin is lower under President Joe Biden, but he still wants voters to attribute the reduction in price to his own administration.
""I, not Crooked Joe Biden, got low insulin pricing for millions of Americans, and the Trump Administration. This was done long before he entered office, and all he does is try to take credit for it," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post."
As the November election approaches, health care, a top priority for voters, remains a contentious issue between Trump and Biden.
A May survey from KFF found that Biden had an 11-point lead over Trump on the issue of ensuring access to affordable health insurance.
Biden outperformed other candidates in discussing health-care issues, but there was a divide among the candidates regarding addressing high health-care costs. The poll, conducted from April 23 to May 1, surveyed 1,479 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
On June 27, the two presidential candidates will hold their initial in-person debate.
On the campaign trail, Biden has used insulin price caps as a key point in his broader economic argument against Trump.
The Inflation Reduction Act saw Biden implement measures to reduce the cost of medicine for seniors, including capping the price of insulin at $35 per month for Medicare beneficiaries. The president has persisted in advocating for a broader insulin cap that would also benefit younger individuals.
"Biden announced in his State of the Union address in March that instead of paying $400 a month for insulin, seniors with diabetes only have to pay $35 a month. He then proposed capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month for every American who needs it."
Despite the persistent inflation that has hindered the U.S. economy's post-pandemic recovery, the Democratic incumbent is attempting to demonstrate his success in lowering consumer costs by highlighting the reduced insulin costs.
In his final year as president, Trump issued an executive order setting a $35 price cap on insulin. However, Biden paused that policy upon taking office as part of a broader review of new regulations.
Despite the lingering memory of Trump-era health-care policies, a CNBC All-America Economic survey from December revealed that Biden leads Trump by 19 points on the issue of health care.
Trump's efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act were unsuccessful, as he failed to provide a viable alternative health-care option. The ACA has ensured that roughly 45 million Americans have access to health insurance, according to a March estimate from the White House.
Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to replacing Obamacare during his 2024 campaign, but has not yet provided details on what the new healthcare plan would entail.
"Trump stated in a video on Truth Social in April that he is not running to repeal the ACA as Biden frequently claims, but rather plans to improve and make it more affordable for individuals."
