President Joe Biden is facing calls to resign from Republican lawmakers following his announcement on Sunday that he will not seek reelection.

"Speaker of the House Mike Johnson stated in a post on X that if Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately."

House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, along with other congressional Republicans, supported Johnson's message and even considered invoking the 25th Amendment.

Trump's campaign claimed that Biden poses a national security threat due to his cognitive decline and is a danger to all citizens in the country.

What does Kamala Harris believe about the safety and security of the American people with Joe Biden in the White House for six more months, given that he withdrew from the campaign due to his rapidly deteriorating condition?

Since his poor debate performance in June, there have been calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race due to concerns about his age, which were exacerbated by his verbal stumbles and hoarse voice.

The president did not mention those concerns or his age in his announcement, and he stated that he will complete the remaining 6 months of his term.

In the best interest of my party and the country, I believe it is necessary for me to step down and concentrate solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the rest of my term, as stated in the letter posted to X.

Dr. Kevin O'Connor, the White House physician, stated in February that Biden is a fit and healthy 81-year-old male who is capable of carrying out his presidential duties.

Biden underwent a brief medical check-up following the June 27 debate and was informed that his health was in good condition.

Biden's symptoms have improved significantly, and he is currently isolating in Delaware after testing positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday.

"The President remains untroubled by any challenges and will proceed with PAXLOVID as scheduled," O'Connor stated in the latest update. "He continues to fulfill all of his presidential responsibilities."

Before Biden declared he wouldn't seek reelection, Republicans were already urging him to resign.

"If Joe Biden decides not to run for reelection, how can he justify remaining President?" Sen. JD Vance, Trump's running mate, said on X Sunday morning. "Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief."

Neither McConnell nor Scalise explicitly stated that Biden should not complete his term in office.
