Biden proposes $105 billion in funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and border security.
- The Biden administration is requesting $105 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, Israel, the U.S. southern border, and other purposes.
- The speaker battle among House Republicans is causing Congress' work to come to a standstill.
On Friday, the Biden administration requested over $105 billion from Congress to meet the security requirements of Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and the U.S. southern border.
The largest request in President Biden's package is over $61 billion for Ukraine, which has received $44 billion in security assistance from the U.S. since February 2022.
He is requesting an additional $14.3 billion for Israel, $2 billion for Taiwan and Indo-Pacific security, and approximately $9 billion for humanitarian assistance.
The militant group Hamas launched a shocking and brutal terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, leading to a war between the two countries. Meanwhile, tensions are rising around Taiwan, which China claims as its own.
The U.S. defense industry will receive approximately $50 billion in supplemental funding, as announced by the White House.
On a call with reporters, Shalanda Young, director of the Office of Management and Budget, stated that the funding will increase production lines, bolster the American economy, ensure our safety, and generate new American job opportunities.
The standstill in Congress's business is due to the division among the House GOP over who should be the speaker. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is pushing for a third vote after failing twice to secure the gavel.
The White House is requesting $7.6 billion for border operations and countering fentanyl, despite criticism from Republicans that it is not doing enough to address migration from Latin America.
Congress was blamed by Young for the insufficient resources at the U.S. southern border.
Congress members have spoken extensively about enhancing border security but have not acted on the $4 billion request sent in August, according to Young.
"Those who refuse to act will not lecture us. We have repeatedly stated that Congress must take action to allocate sufficient resources for the border," she emphasized.
Jake Sullivan, the national security advisor, stated that the budget request mirrors the U.S. leadership's global standing.
"Ensuring the safety of the American people and advancing America's national security is crucial, as the world closely observes Congress' next move, according to Sullivan," he stated.
Biden announced a funding request as a "wise investment that will bring long-term benefits to American security."
Biden stated that the extra funds for Israel and Ukraine's war efforts would aid in maintaining American troops' safety, creating a more secure, peaceful, and prosperous world for future generations.
