  • The fall of Syria's dictatorship presents a "historic chance" for the Syrian people, according to President Joe Biden.
  • He cautioned about the dangers of uncertainty, including a possible revival of ISIS.
  • The U.S. plans to support Syria and its neighbors during its political transition.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden expressed his support for the fall of Syria's dictatorship, while cautioning about the unpredictability of the political transition in the country.

"The long-suffering people of Syria have a historic opportunity to build a better future for their proud country, but it also comes with risk and uncertainty. The United States will work with partners and stakeholders in Syria to manage the risk and seize this opportunity."

Biden announced that the U.S. will support Syria's neighbors, including Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Israel, during the transition period and send senior officials to the region. He also pledged to continue the mission against ISIS and to ensure the security of detention facilities in Syria that hold ISIS fighters.

Biden stated that ISIS will attempt to exploit the current void to regain its power and establish a secure base. However, we will not allow this to occur.

On Sunday, U.S. forces carried out a dozen precision air strikes in Syria, focusing on ISIS camps and operatives.

Biden stated that the U.S. will remain vigilant against the threat posed by ISIS, as well as some of the rebel groups that overthrew Assad's regime, who have a history of terrorism and human rights violations.

As they assume more responsibility, we will evaluate not only their words but their actions, he stated.

The U.S. will aid "all Syrian groups" in establishing an independent, sovereign government and provide humanitarian aid after 13 years of civil war.

Biden stated that his administration is dedicated to reuniting Austin Tice with his family. Tice, an American journalist, was kidnapped in Damascus in 2012 and held captive by the Syrian government. Biden confirmed that the U.S. believes Tice is still alive.

On Sunday, Syrian rebel forces captured the capital of Damascus. Russia's Foreign Ministry announced that President Bashar al-Assad has resigned and departed from Syria, bringing an end to his family's long-standing dictatorship in the country.

Biden stated that we are uncertain about Assad's location, but there are reports that he is in Moscow. He later emphasized that Assad must be held responsible.

In 2000, Assad took over as leader of the country after his father passed away. Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah were among Assad's allies. Biden stated that all three allies are now "significantly weaker" compared to when he first took office.
