In his first State of the Union address, President Biden aimed to garner public support for Ukraine, which is currently under attack from Russia.

Biden faced the challenge of articulating a new vision for a domestic policy agenda that could help his party move beyond the disappointment of the failed Build Back Better bill.

Biden stated in a House chamber where masks were mostly absent for the first time in years that Putin would face severe consequences for underestimating NATO and the global order.

Putin's war on Ukraine will have made Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger, according to him.

According to Biden, the world is leaning towards peace and security as democracies are gaining strength in the struggle between democracy and autocracy.

Biden declared that the US will prohibit Russian aircraft from flying over American airspace, following the lead of the European Union and Canada.

In the past week, NATO and G-7 allies have imposed some of the toughest sanctions on Moscow and its allies.

On Tuesday, Biden announced that the United States has no plans to slow down the imposition of penalties. In fact, he stated that the country is currently working on expanding the scope of these restrictions to include some of Russia's wealthiest oligarchs.

Biden stated, "Tonight, I address the Russian oligarchs and corrupt leaders who have profited from this regime's violence: 'No more'."

It was uncertain on Wednesday if any of the international community's sanctions would affect Putin's decision-making regarding Ukraine.

On Wednesday morning in Kyiv, the Russian military appeared ready to deploy tens of thousands of soldiers in an attempt to remove the democratically elected government of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Beyond Ukraine, Biden's desire to unite Americans behind a common purpose on Tuesday was strong.

Despite the perception that we never agree, he stated during his hourlong speech that he signed 80 bipartisan bills into law last year, including measures to prevent government shutdowns, protect Asian-Americans from hate crimes, and reform military justice.

Biden presented a "Unity Agenda for the Nation," consisting of four policy objectives that he claimed have broad bipartisan backing among Republicans and Democrats, centrists and ideologues.

  • Biden proposed a plan to tackle the mental health crisis among children whose lives and education have been disrupted by the pandemic for years.
  • Increased funding and medical services for veterans.
  • An advanced research project, like the Defense Department's top-secret DARPA, aims to eradicate cancer.

He stated that it is crucial for us to demonstrate to the nation that we can unite and accomplish great things.

The success of Biden's domestic plans is uncertain due to the upcoming election in 2022 and the deep ideological and party divisions among Americans.

In late February, a Washington Post-ABC poll revealed that Biden's job approval rating reached its lowest point during his presidency, with 37% approval and 55% disapproval.
