Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes is labeling threats against election officials as "domestic terrorism."
Fontes stated in a Sunday interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that threats against elections officials in the United States of America constitute domestic terrorism. He defined terrorism as "a threat or violence for a political outcome."
As the battle for the White House intensifies, local election officials have raised safety concerns, prompting his remarks.
A report from the Brennan Center for Justice earlier this month revealed that 38% of local election officials in the U.S. have experienced threats, harassment or abuse for carrying out their duties, and over half are worried about the safety of their colleagues.
Since the last election, local election officials have taken measures to enhance election security, with over 90% of officials reporting that they have implemented steps such as attending security training and updating contingency plans and election technology.
Fontes believes that the U.S. Department of Justice is intensifying its efforts to combat threats by beginning to prosecute.
The DOJ is currently investigating numerous threats directed at election workers and has charged 20 individuals, with 13 of them already convicted, in March.
"We're collaborating with law enforcement nationwide to tackle these issues," he stated. "It's not too late, but we must confront it honestly."
