A female staff member of Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign has accused a Secret Service agent of sexual assault, and the Secret Service is currently investigating the matter, the agency announced on Wednesday.

An employee misconduct allegation is being investigated by the U.S. Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility, as stated by a Secret Service spokesman to CNBC.

"The Secret Service maintains strict standards for its personnel, as stated by the spokesman in an email. The employee has been put on administrative leave until the investigation's results are known."

The Office of the Vice President takes the safety of staff seriously, as stated in a report from Harris' office to NBC News.

According to Real Clear Politics, "other people present" reportedly observed the agent's behavior towards the Harris campaign staffer.

The assassination attempt on Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania has sparked criticism of the Secret Service.

At a rally, a gunman on a roof fired at Trump, killing one person and injuring two others. The Secret Service agent who shot the gunman was able to prevent any further harm.

The Senate Homeland Security Committee and its Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations released a report on Wednesday, stating that the Secret Service's advance personnel roles and responsibilities for Trump's rally were unclear and lacked accountability, and the Secret Service failed to coordinate effectively with state and local law enforcement.

The committee staff's report found that Secret Service personnel shifted responsibility for the near-fatal incident involving Trump.
