  • Sources close to the matter revealed that New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with criminal offenses in a Manhattan federal court.
  • The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office is investigating former New York City police officer and state senator Adams for potential collusion with the Turkish government during his 2021 mayoral campaign to illegally funnel donations into the campaign.

On Wednesday night, sources informed CNBC that New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with criminal offenses in a federal court in Manhattan.

The sealed indictment, at least in part, accuses Adams of criminal conduct related to his 2021 mayoral campaign donations.

The first New York mayor to be charged with a crime while still in office is Adams.

The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office was previously investigating Adams, a former New York City police officer and state senator, for allegedly conspiring with the Turkish government to illegally funnel campaign donations.

On Monday, the New York Times reported that prosecutors had submitted grand jury subpoenas to City Hall, Adams, and his campaign in July, requesting information about four countries: Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan.

On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., urged the mayor to resign due to the "flood of resignations and vacancies" caused by federal investigations into administration officials, which she claimed were "threatening government functions."

Ocasio-Cortez stated that he should resign for the benefit of the city.

If Adams resigns, Williams would replace him as acting mayor.

Multiple federal probes are underway into Adams and his associates.

On Tuesday, David Banks, the city Schools Chancellor, informed Adams that he planned to retire at the end of 2024.

Weeks after federal authorities seized electronic devices belonging to Banks, his brother, Deputy Mayor Phil Banks, and his fiancee, Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Banks made a surprise announcement.

Terence Banks, another brother of the banker, is being probed by the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office for allocating city contacts worth millions of dollars to companies after hiring his consulting firm.

The NYPD is being investigated by the same federal prosecutors' office for allegations that James Caban, the brother of former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, used his connections to the department and his brother to gain an advantage for his nightclub security business.

On Sept. 12, a week after his phone was seized by federal investigators, Edward Caban resigned as police commissioner.

After three days of Edward Caban's resignation, Lisa Zornberg, Adam's mayoral counsel and chief legal advisor, resigned, stating that she could no longer fulfill her duties.

On Friday, investigators searched the homes of Thomas Donlon, the acting NYPD commissioner, under federal warrants.

Donlon, a former top FBI counterterrorism official in New York, stated that investigators seized materials from him about 20 years ago, which were not related to his work with the New York City Police Department.
