According to NBC News projections, Tim Sheehy, the Republican nominee, will defeat Jon Tester, the incumbent Democratic senator, in the election for a Senate seat from Montana.
A wealthy businessman and former Navy SEAL, Sheehy, was heavily promoted by the GOP as one of their strongest prospects for winning a Senate seat.
In the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris lost to former President Donald Trump, who won key battleground states and gained seats in the Senate for Republicans.
A farmer who had been elected to three terms in the Senate was facing strong opposition in his bid for re-election.
This week, Sheehy, a 38-year-old owner of a company that fights fires from the air, faced challenges in an interview with radio host Megyn Kelly as he tried to explain a 2015 incident in which he accidentally fired his handgun in Montana's Glacier National Park and ended up in the hospital.
Sheehy, a park ranger, said he accidentally shot himself in the arm, but he denies this, claiming he went to the hospital due to fears about a bullet from a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan that he did not report to superiors.
