  • On Wednesday, a man was arrested by the U.S. Capitol Police for attempting to enter the Capitol complex with a machete and three knives, while former President Jimmy Carter was being honored with a lying-in-state ceremony.

On Wednesday, a man with a machete and three knives was arrested by police while attempting to enter the U.S. Capitol, where former President Jimmy Carter's body was lying in state.

An X-ray screening at the Capitol Visitor Center revealed a weapon in an unidentified man's bag at approximately 2 p.m. ET, leading to his stop by police.

In addition to the machete, three knives were discovered in the bag by officers.

Authorities stated that the man was apprehended for several counts of possessing a hazardous weapon.

On Tuesday, Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, was laid to rest in the Capitol Rotunda. His funeral will take place at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday.

Starting Tuesday evening, the public was granted access to the Capitol to pay tribute to the 39th president.
