What is the average cost of World Series tickets?
The 2024 World Series tickets between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are among the most expensive in Major League Baseball history, and fans are willing to pay a premium.
The average price for a World Series ticket in the secondary market in Los Angeles before Game 1 was $3,887, which is the second-most expensive average since TicketIQ began tracking the data in 2010.
StubHub predicts that this year's World Series will be the best-selling tournament in history.
Fans of the Dodgers and Yankees were asked by CNBC Make It about the amount they spent to watch their team play in the World Series and whether they believed it was worth the cost.
'Whatever the price for my kidney, it's going up for sale.'
Lisa Altuve, a 27-year-old LA resident and avid Dodgers fan, eagerly anticipates watching her beloved team play in the World Series. This year, the experience is even more special for her and her family, as it comes after the passing of Fernando Valenzuela, the Mexican-born star pitcher who began his career with the Dodgers in the 1980s and passed away on October 22.
Josh Trujillo, 28, and his game-day partner paid a total of $2,500 for their two seats.
Calvin Stovall, 71, flew from Florida to LA for the weekend to watch Games 1 and 2.
"I'm like a little boy at Christmas," he exclaimed. Although he spent a small fortune, he was content with his decision: "I can't reveal how much I spent on tickets because my wife will find out," he said with a chuckle.
Stovall bought tickets to sit just to the right of home plate close to the field, and he said it would be worth it because that's why he worked and saved his money, and he deserved it.
On the Sunday prior to the Dodgers securing their post-season spot, Riley Reese, 35, spent approximately $1,200 on his ticket. Despite the cost, he is content with his purchase and would be willing to pay more if the Dodgers and Yankees were to face off in an elimination game.
"Whatever the going rate for a Game 6 or 7 back in LA is, I'm willing to give it," he said.
Chris Garcia and Del Posadas each spent $2,500 on their tickets to the game. For Garcia, being at the game is of utmost importance, as the last time the Dodgers won the World Series was in 2020, following a shortened season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To him, the cost of the tickets is insignificant.
""In 1981, the last time these two teams played in the World Series, it was a special occasion for Posadas," he said."
'As a true Yankees fan, I'm willing to spend anything'
Since 2016, Dan Schwartz has been planning and saving for a Yankees World Series, coinciding with the MLB debut of superstar outfielder Aaron Judge.
One week before Monday night's game, Schwartz and a friend flew in from San Francisco and spent nearly $2,000 each to sit in section 109 at Yankee Stadium, where they got a clear view of the Yankee dugout.
"Schwartz, 39, said that it's worth it to him to watch the Yankees in the World Series after 15 years of absence, and even more so if they win."
The price of Game 4 tickets on StubHub has decreased by nearly 20% from Monday, as the Yankees are currently trailing the Dodgers 3-0 in the series.
Regardless of their seating location, all the fans who spoke with CNBC Make It spent at least $1,000 to attend Game 3.
Ashley Gallagher, 25, bought her ticket immediately after the schedule was released, spending approximately $1,300 to watch from section 427, which was situated high above third base, and she admitted that she would have spent even more.
"I've always dreamed of attending a World Series game, and now that I've crossed it off my bucket list, it's an amazing feeling," she said. "If the Yankees were playing and had a chance to win, I'd be willing to spend thousands more to be there."
The morning of the game, James Bordes, 22, bought his ticket, hoping for a cheaper price but ended up paying $1,200 to sit in section 419, like Gallagher.
"Being here to support the team was worth it," he said. "I don't know when we'll see the Yankees in a World Series again, so I really wanted to be here. Ultimately, as a true Yankees fan, I'm willing to spend anything."
