Upwork has identified 5 in-demand admin skills that can earn you more than $100 per hour.

Upwork's Most In-Demand Work Skills in 2024 report highlights data analytics, social media marketing, and accounting as the most popular skills and specialties on its freelance marketplace.

Margaret Lilani, vice president of talent delivery at the company, stated that the tasks or groups of tasks that were "more in demand year over year versus less in demand and what was up and coming."

Upwork categorizes its widely used skills by field, including coding and sales. In addition to this, the platform has recently released a list of customer service and admin support tasks that are highly sought after, some of which may not necessitate extensive experience.

Here are its top five in the category.

General virtual assistant

Lilani says that if everyone had a virtual assistant to handle their calendar, email, and presentations, their lives would be significantly improved. This is why virtual assistants are highly sought after for their administrative work.

Vicki Salemi, a career expert at Monster, states that they can assist multiple clients with the task.

If you're interested in being a generalist, Lilani says that their work can vary and they can specialize in tools like Microsoft Copilot or tasks like social media.

While it's not necessary to have a bachelor's degree to become a virtual assistant, having one can be beneficial.

General virtual assistants charge as much as $65 per hour on Upwork.

Data entry

The task of inputting data into programs such as Microsoft Excel and updating records is a crucial skill for various business functions, including customer and applicant tracking systems.

"Lilani emphasizes that the skill is not going away and stresses the importance of accurately placing and conveying information."

Many employers only require a high school diploma.

Data entry specialists charge as much as $100 per hour on Upwork.

Digital project management

A digital project manager is typically hired by companies to oversee the implementation of a new branding campaign or website redesign.

Lilani states that the project manager will ensure the digital project stays on track by designing the scope, managing deadlines, and delivering on time and at the promised quality to clients. Due to the numerous administrative tasks involved, this role falls under the category of admin and customer service.

Some of these roles may necessitate a bachelor's degree and work experience.

General research services

Discovering customer problems and deciding what to build next is crucial in business, and research plays a vital role in this process, as Lilani explains.

Researchers help businesses solve their problems by finding, sifting through, and synthesizing information.

Employers may require a bachelor's degree and some experience, while some may demand a master's or doctorate.

Researchers charge as much as $175 per hour.

Dropshipping and order processing

An online retail process called dropshipping involves outsourcing storage and shipping to another supplier, while the seller is responsible for managing their store and marketing it.

Salemi states that e-commerce is an "area that continues to grow" and that dropshipping experts can assist sellers with their website design, SEO writing, accounting, and product descriptions.

Dropshippers on Upwork charge as much as $250 per hour.
