Up to $17,000 in incentives for digital nomads and remote workers in tech to relocate to rural Spain: What you need to know.
If you're a tech industry worker seeking a change of scenery and are a digital nomad or remote worker, Spain could be the perfect destination for you.
The local government of Extremadura, Spain, has announced a relocation incentive of up to €15,000 or $16,703 for those who move to the area for at least two years. The autonomous community, with one of the lowest populations in Spain, has allocated €2 million to attract 200 digital nomads and remote workers to the region.
The Extremadura government has announced grants for "available housing, arable land, and everything necessary to expedite their arrival."
The ongoing repopulation program "Live in Ambroz" aims to address the issue of population decline and lack of services in the Ambroz Valley, located in the province of Cáceres.
Euronews was informed by Spanish authorities that the grants' applications will open in September and can be submitted online. To be eligible for the grants, certain conditions must be met.
- You can't have lived in Extremadura within the last six months
- Be a legal resident in Spain and have a foreign identity number
- Work remotely in the tech industry
Individuals from outside the EU, such as those from the United States, can apply for Spain's digital nomad visa, but they must have already obtained it.
The $16,703 grant will be divided into several awards. Women and those under 30 who reside in towns with less than 5,000 residents will receive €10,000 or $11,135, while others will receive €8,000 or $8,908. After two years, women and those under 30 who choose to stay another year will receive a second payment of €5,000 or $5,568, while the others will be given €4,000 or $4,454.
If selected, applicants must register with a municipality in Extremadura and obtain a padrón certificate within three months, after which they have one month to request payment of the grants, which will be made in a single transaction.
