Molding the future, teachers are society's critical role, shaping young people into adults.

High school teachers earn less than many other professionals, with a median annual salary of $65,220, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In comparison, software developers earn $130,160 per year and lawyers earn $145,760 per year.

A recent Bankrate survey found that on average, side hustlers earn $891 per month.

Here are three side hustles for teachers to consider.

Tutor

Teachers can easily enter the side hustle world by tutoring, according to Jen Glantz, founder of Bridesmaid for Hire and the creator of the Monday Pick-Me-Up and Odd Jobs newsletter. Websites to consider include:

  • Wyzant provides personalized instruction in various subjects, both online and in-person. The site offers tutoring in animation, math SATs, and Spanish, among others. Tutors set their own rates, with most charging between $25 and $100 per hour, according to Sidehusl.com. Wyzant takes a 25% fee off a tutor's rate.
  • Lessonface offers virtual tutoring in various subjects, including painting and banjo classes, as well as language lessons. Classes can be taken individually or in groups, and teachers set their own rates. The site charges a 15% fee for students who find their tutors through the site and a 5% fee for tutors who recruit their own students. Currently, a Mandarin teacher is charging $60 per hour, while a knitting instructor is charging $50 per hour.
  • TutorOcean is a platform that enables tutors to teach online or in-person in a range of subjects, including physics and essay writing. Tutors set their own rates, and the site charges a 10% or 20% fee, depending on how students find the course. For instance, a math tutor is charging $25 per hour, while a neuroscience teacher is charging $65 per hour.

Etsy seller

Teachers can earn passive income by selling lesson plans on Etsy or Teachers Pay Teachers. These platforms allow teachers to post their own lesson plans and sell them to other teachers. Once posted, teachers can continue to sell their lesson plans for a long time.

An Etsy seller is offering a complete kindergarten lesson plan for the entire school year for $3.50, while a Teachers Pay Teachers teacher is selling a first day of school activity for an 8th grade U.S. history class for $4.

Etsy charges a set-up fee, a 20 cent listing fee per item, and a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price. Teachers Pay Teachers has a one-time membership fee of $29 or a premium membership fee of $60 per year.

Dog walker

Numerous gig apps are simple to join and start using, such as DoorDash for food delivery, Lyft for rides, Instacart for grocery shopping, and Rover for dog walking.

Summer is a great time for teachers to enjoy their summers off, according to side hustle expert Kevin Ha. He recommends dog walking and food delivery as fun gigs to do during the warm weather.

On average, food delivery drivers earn $18 per hour, while nationwide, dog walkers make between $15 and $24 per hour, according to their respective sources.
