Although not everyone in her life believed it was the best career decision, Gillian Munson ultimately decided to take on the role of Vimeo's chief financial officer. She is now grateful that she did not heed the criticism.

""Someone I deeply respected didn't want me to take this job and urged me to consider a different one. I ultimately relied on my instincts," she says to CNBC Make It."

Munson, 54, with over 30 years of professional finance experience, made a wise decision by following her instinct to join the video services company.

"I've received various recommendations from different individuals regarding my career path, often based on their own desires. However, while their input is valuable, I believe it's crucial to follow your own aspirations."

She declares that the finance team she has put together at Vimeo is her best team ever.

""Pulling years of experience together to form a reflective team is how I like to lead, and I couldn't be having more fun," Munson says."

Why you should pursue 'fun' work

Munson believes that people often prioritize securing and maintaining employment, while disregarding whether they would be content with the job. She regrets not determining her preferred type of work earlier, as work consumes a significant portion of one's day.

Munson, earlier in her career, worked in investment banking and admired a senior female partner at her bank. However, she felt nervous about one day being in a similar position and thought, "I'm not as skilled as she is."

Munson wondered what the coolest job ever was, and her response was CFO.

""I have always admired the work of CFOs," she remarks."

Munson discovered her role models in two CFOs she encountered early in her career, who excelled at transforming their company's financial narratives into compelling stories. This motivated her to follow in their footsteps.

Munson's dream job inspired her to shift from investment banking to corporate finance. Her top career advice: Don't limit yourself to your current or next job; think beyond.

Imagine what your days would look like if you occupied the job two positions ahead of yours, she advises.

"To be excited to get up and do the work, Munson suggests putting yourself in those shoes and thinking, "I'm going to be comfortable doing that.""
