This Italian village is providing $1 homes to Americans seeking to relocate overseas following the election.
The village of Ollolai on the Italian island of Sardinia is enticing American expats with $1 homes and other incentives.
Since 2018, the rural Italian village has been selling dilapidated houses for as little as one euro. After the 2024 U.S. presidential election, it launched a website offering even more cheap homes.
"Are you feeling overwhelmed by global politics? Seeking a more balanced lifestyle and new opportunities, the website suggests exploring Sardinia's stunning paradise for your European escape."
Francesco Columbu, the mayor of Ollolai, revealed to CNN that the website was designed to attract Americans following the 2024 presidential elections.
"Of course, we can't name a specific U.S. president who just got elected, but it's clear that many Americans want to escape from him and leave the country," Columbo said.
The website was created to cater to the relocation needs of Americans after the U.S. elections. The digital nomad scheme, launched last year, was exclusively for Americans.
Ollolai's community can be revived by the best people, according to Columbu, who is a big fan of the United States.
""Our top priority is Americans, and we will prioritize their applications. While we cannot ban people from other countries, Americans will have a streamlined process. We believe they are crucial to our success and our winning card," he said to CNN."
The mayor said the village is offering three levels of accommodations:
- Free temporary homes to certain digital nomads
- One-euro homes in need of renovations
- Ready-to-occupy houses for up to 100,000 euros or about $106,000.
Soon, CNN reports, the website will feature photos and plans of the available properties.
Over 35,000 requests for information on the houses have been received by the mayor since the website launch, with the majority of these requests coming from the U.S.
Since the scheme was launched in 2018, Columbu has sold 10 homes and has approximately 100 unoccupied, cheap homes available for purchase and ready-to-move-in ones.
