This 25-year-old freelancer earned six figures in just six months by leveraging Fiverr.
In November 2015, Alex Fasulo had been residing in New York City for approximately a month. That morning, she departed her apartment in the Bushwick district of Brooklyn and hopped on the subway to her public relations employment. Following her subway journey, she continued walking.
Fasulo, now 25, tells CNBC Make It that the day he quit his job, he felt a sense of rebellious freedom he had never experienced before because he despised the job so much.
She visited four museums that day, but soon the realization of her actions and a feeling of anxiety took hold.
I was overwhelmed with the thought, 'Oh my gosh, I'm an adult and I can't handle it,' due to the fear of failure.
In January 2015, Fasulo, a recent college graduate living in Albany, NY, signed up for Fiverr, a freelance platform, at her mother's suggestion as a way to earn extra cash for new clothes or dining out. Fasulo offered editing services for articles and blog posts, charging $5 per gig. She devoted only one to two hours a week to her side hustle, bringing in around $100 to $200 per month.
After quitting her job, Fasulo didn't just need extra cash; she urgently required money to sustain her living.
Fasulo decided to offer nine new $5 services, including press-release writing, as she had experience with it from her previous job.
The next morning, Fasulo was stunned to see the success of her press-release gig. She woke up to a flood of orders pouring in.
The following morning, after seeing it, I was thrilled. I recall phoning my mom and expressing my joy. That day, when I earned $100 from writing in a single day, I believe I cried. I couldn't believe that I could work from home, set my own schedule, and still make that much money. It all happened so quickly.
After a month, Fasulo was earning enough on Fiverr to pay her rent and living costs.
In February 2016, Fasulo recalls seeing the number 35, which indicated that he had 35 orders for his writing. He says that the sudden increase in orders happened so quickly that he was not yet skilled in time management. As a result, he felt a bit overwhelmed and anxious about managing his new lifestyle.
In 2017, Fasulo made $81,000 on Fiverr, increasing her rates to $15 per gig after being approved for Fiverr Pro, which offers serious business buyers and elite peers.
Fasulo has earned six figures on Fiverr this year, with $151,000 in writing services revenue and a total of 4,800 orders completed. Her Fiverr profile has 3,175 reviews and an average rating of five stars.
Fasulo usually works from Monday to Friday for nine hours a day and sometimes on weekends. She typically handles larger projects, with each gig costing $100. She is a fast writer and completes around six to seven orders per day, including press releases, blog posts, and website content creation. Her biggest source of income comes from website content creation. She works with well-known brands and recently edited her first book.
Fasulo has worked with members of the British royal family, who requested their identity remain confidential, and had them edit their text messages to a more professional level. Additionally, Fasulo has also edited high-level political documents for various clients.
Fiverr's anonymity is one of its advantages, as it allows users to remain anonymous and protect their privacy. This is likely why people enjoy using Fiverr. On its website, Fiverr states that it keeps user identities anonymous to protect privacy, and any personal information exchanges must be done through the order page.
Despite having a degree in political science from the State University of New York, Fasulo always felt that she would end up writing, but she never imagined entrepreneurship would be her career path. However, she now loves it.
Fasulo claims that being able to set her own hours and schedule has completely transformed her life. As a passionate traveler, she can explore the world as much as she desires (her recent trips have taken her to Mexico and California), without being constrained by a 9-to-5 work schedule or an office setting.
In New York City, she now earns more than she ever could have imagined after taking a pay cut for the job in public relations from her previous $2,200 monthly salary in Albany.
Fasulo admits that despite his recent financial success, he still feels like a novice when it comes to managing money. He often finds himself unsure of what to do with it, so he turns to his mother for advice. Although he is a natural saver, he doesn't spend recklessly with his newfound wealth.
Fasulo has moved from her Buschwick apartment into her "dream apartment" in Brooklyn Heights due to her new income. Gazing at the sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, she can't help but smile.
When I initially resided in New York City, I occupied dilapidated dwellings due to financial constraints. Now, being able to dwell in this luxurious apartment is astonishing for me, as I rise each morning to view the sun and utilize an elevator.
Fasulo has become an unofficial advocate for Fiverr and entrepreneurship. She hosts a little show on Instagram called #FreelanceFriday, where she helps people get started on the platform and offers tips and tricks. When her friends in the city lose their job and are struggling to pay rent, she assists them in getting started on the site, just as she did years ago.
Fasulo never imagined that Fiverr would provide the lifestyle he can now afford. If asked, he would have said no. Although he knew Fiverr could help him meet his Bushwick rent and buy food, he had no idea Pro would launch and people would pay what they do for his product. Fasulo would have said you're crazy.
